The University of Oregon seeks a Chief Auditor. A world-class public teaching and research university of 24,500 students located in Eugene, UO is the flagship research university of the Oregon University System and one of only two AAU universities in the Greater Northwest. The University’s Academic Plan affirms the University’s commitment to a core of liberal education, an academic program on a human scale, a curriculum shaped by respectful stewardship of human and natural resources, institutional agility in balancing between multidisciplinary innovations and traditional disciplinary strengths, cooperative leadership and engagement with the community, and a spirit of resourceful creativity. The University employs more than 1900 tenure-related and non-tenure track faculty and 2700 staff.

The Chief Auditor directs the university’s independent audit program, and coordinates a broad range of audit functions in support of the needs of the university.  The Chief Auditor is responsible for creating and managing a program to deliver financial, operational, performance and compliance audits as needed.  The Chief Auditor reports administratively to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO, and will work closely with the Board of Trustees, university leadership, faculty and staff.

To be successful in this role, the Chief Auditor will manage the university’s audit program by developing, implementing and managing annual and long-term audit plans based on industry best practices in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies; evaluating financial and operational practices and procedures to ensure adequate controls and collaborating with appropriate university staff to identify and assess risk; creating and managing a program to prevent, identify and investigate fraud, waste and abuse; and through reporting audit findings to Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO and other university officials. The Chief Auditor will also conduct ad hoc and consulting assignments as directed and act as university liaison and primary contact to external auditors.  This position will coordinate activities between external agencies and university departments.

The Chief Auditor will participate as a member of university leadership team(s) when assigned and consult with managers and leaders across the university to educate and show best practices related to business operations and  internal controls.  This position will also be responsible for developing and managing annual resource plans (personnel and financial), providing comprehensive supervision of unit staff and fostering an inclusive work environment.

Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or closely related field and five years of progressively responsible experience in internal auditing and a demonstrated record of excellent oral and written communication skills. An advanced degree in a closely related field, CPA, CIA, or other professional certification with experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred. Experience in auditing sponsored research expenditures is preferred.  Finalist must complete a background check.

To ensure consideration, please submit application materials by January 8, 2014. The position will remain open until filled.  All communications will be treated confidentially, subject to applicable law. Nominations, inquiries, and applications (including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and the names of five references) should be directed electronically in confidence to Katy Hatfield, Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO at katyh@uoregon.edu.  The University of Oregon is an AA/EO/ADA institution and is strongly committed to cultural diversity.
