Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the appropriate administrator and/or designee, performs duties of a Recycling Equipment Operator to collect and transport recyclable material from various location throughout campus. Position shall require operation of motorized equipment, including skip loader, forklift, pick-up truck, small utility vehicle and other vehicles as directed. May operate additional equipment in the classification across the department as requested. Position may also be directed to perform landscape maintenance and litter collection as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintenance Activities and Equipment Operation - Responsible for miscellaneous activities including but not limited to the following activities: Maintain cleanliness of various recycling and staging areas of trash and recyclable materials as directed by the Manager or his designee. Clean out debris around compactors on regular basis. Clean around roll-offs at collection area as necessary, etc.
  • Green Waste Landscape Debris Recycling - Responsible for maintaining landscape debris recycling area at the Grounds field house.
  • Mixed Paper, Cardboard, Bottles and Cans Recycling - Periodically responsible for collecting clear plastic bags of mixed paper, bottles, cans, and other recycles from designated locations throughout campus. Requires manual lifting of heavy bags of paper and boxes of materials.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to perform skilled driving and operations of motorized equipment relevant to the requirements of the position. Safe driving record as evidenced by applicant provided DMV printout. Ability to make independent decisions relative to the requirements of the job. Ability to work with others and interact positively with others. Good written and oral interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to one year of paid truck driving, automotive equipment operation, or bus driving experience, including operation of heavy trucks of three axles or more, or large loaders, forklifts, or other equipment required.

  • Experience in working with and handling recyclable materials.

  • Experience and ability to manually lift heavy materials. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with assistance.

  • Experience working in a university or large institutional setting.

    Physical Summary
  • Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing

Licenses / Certificates

Valid CA Driver's license, approved medical certificate, good driving record required.

Certified forklift operator's license.

Skip loader and Telehandler training certification.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3656 - $6561 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
