Child Development Teacher

Essential Job Functions
Child development teachers will provide an educational classroom setting for young children (infancy
through five years) and university students in a laboratory center designed to model best practices in
the field of early childhood education. Using an emergent, negotiated curriculum, they teach
individualized fundamental pre-academic skills and lead activities to promote language development,
cognitive and perceptual development, and gross motor development in children representing a
cross-section of backgrounds. Work includes supervising college students who teach in the program
for practicum experience (generally 2-3 per semester). Work also includes coordinating child
development lab experiences with University faculty from an array of disciplines (i.e. child
development, early childhood education, art education, special education, human development, music
education) and supervising lab students from these various courses. Work is performed
independently under the general supervision of the Director and in cooperation with University faculty.
Work is reviewed through periodic staff meetings, individual conferences, and observation of work performed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Designs and implements an emergent, negotiated curriculum utilizing currently accepted best
practices and innovative techniques. Leads activities in language development, perception and
reading development, pre-academics, fine and gross motor skills, and social skill development.
Supervises and trains university students who teach in the program for practicum experience;
evaluates the performance of the practicum students.
Coordinates and supervises shorter-term lab experiences for university students from a variety of
disciplines.
Provides information about the techniques of the program to visitors.
Participates in staff development opportunities, including state-mandated workshops and in-service
trainings.
Documents the children’s learning in various ways and makes this learning visible to parents,
university students, and the children themselves.
Maintains a developmental portfolio on each child.
Schedules and conducts annual home visits.
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred education, training, experience, and skills beyond minimum requirement:
Birth-Kindergarten Teacher Licensure
Experience working with infants and toddlers
A thorough knowledge of the growth and development of young children and the ability to use this
knowledge to plan and implement appropriate programs to meet children’s needs.
A thorough knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and educational techniques used in
teaching preschool children 0 to 5 years of age.
The ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
The ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers, and faculty
associated with the program.
The ability to supervise students from the University doing practicum work in the program.
Experience in a university child development laboratory setting.
A personal philosophy embracing constructive guidance, social constructivists methods, an
emergent, negotiated curriculum, documentation of children’s experiences and learning, the
importance of community, and environment as co-teacher.
Documentation of current CPR and First Aid training.
Must obtain criminal background check clearance.
Must be trained in CPR and First Aid (within first 2 months of employment)
