Position Announcement

The Lead Arborist performs the trimming/pruning of trees and shrubs, completes removal and replanting of trees and other shrubbery/wooded plants as needed. Maintains proper soil conditions for tree growth, identifies and treats tree diseases, and consults with clients by providing reports and other advice as guidance of tree placement, maintenance, and removals on campus.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Regulates the campus Integrated Arborist work including the care, maintenance, and new planting of all trees and shrubs on campus. May include other landscape duties in coordination with the Grounds Director.
  • Trains and supervises hourly Arborist workers.
  • Responsible for the acquisition, safe use, and maintenance of the Arborist tools, materials and equipment.
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the Arborist procedures, techniques, materials, etc. through continuing professional development and training.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related job as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate's degree and two years of related experience or any combination of education and experience totaling four years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the summary of duties; OR any combination of education and/or experience related to the summary of duties totaling five years.
Licenses or Certifications:
ISA Certification to be obtained within the first year of employment. Must be able to maintain certification throughout employment. Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of tree type nurturing and care.
  • Knowledge of tree names, landscape use, and cultural requirements.
  • Knowledge of tree illnesses/disease and its proper prognosis and treatments.
  • Knowledge of proper tree cutting techniques and safety regulations.
  • Skills
  • Skills in operation of landscape and chemical application equipment.
  • Skills in training and supervision of hourly and full time employees with proper use of equipment and pruning methods.
  • Skills in time and resource management.
  • Abilities
  • Ability to diagnose tree conditions, cultural needs, and recommend treatment.
  • Ability to run and operate heavy equipment such as but not limited to: wood chippers, bucket lifts, back hoes, and other heavy equipment related to the proper pruning and cutting down of trees.
  • Ability to climb ladders and use any other proper tree climbing gear.
