The School of Education and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University seeks a tenure-track, Assistant, Associate, or Full professor in PreK-3 literacy education and family literacy. This is a joint appointment between the School of Education and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach (75%/25%).


Position responsibilities will vary with rank, but will include a focus on under-served and diverse children and families with the goal of expanding their access to high-quality education and interventions, and creating partnerships that support student achievement associated with an enriched environment provided by experts in elementary literacy and family and community literacy.  In addition, position responsibilities include teaching in graduate and undergraduate literacy programs, and contributing to the growth of the program in literacy both in research and grant activities.


Research interests may include identifying factors at the child, classroom, school, family, community or societal levels that encourage, accelerate, deter, or inhibit learning or studying the effectiveness of school and family literacy programs.  Translational scholarship may include the development, implementation, enhancement, or evaluation of current school-based, literacy interventions, child, family, or community-based educational opportunities, resources and programs in district and communities in Iowa.

We seek a dynamic professor to expand a burgeoning research, outreach and extension, and teaching program into what we envision as a leading literacy education initiative in the state and Midwest. This newly created, first-of-its-kind, tenure-track faculty position that is shared between the School of Education and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach requires interdisciplinary research, collaboration and engagement with teachers, schools, youth, families, and community organizations across Iowa.  We seek a dynamic faculty member to develop a model of cooperative integrated, literacy research and outreach family literacy education initiatives for the state.

The individual in this position will have opportunity to work with a growing faculty focused on teacher education, social justice, STEM and English learners in the School of Education, faculty and staff within Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and youth and families throughout Iowa.

Required Qualifications:

An earned doctorate in literacy education, or related field, with a concentration in pre-K-3. 


In addition, candidates for a tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor must meet university standards for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, including an established record of scholarly publications in top-tier, refereed journals; a record of acquisition of external funding for research activities; nationally recognized contributions to scholarship in their area of expertise, and demonstrated effectiveness in teaching.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse youth, family and community members, and students, staff and faculty.
  • Experience teaching in an elementary school setting or other relevant setting with children in diverse language and cultural settings.
  • Established record of research or involvement in PreK-3 literacy and family literacy.
  • Established record or experience with Extension and/or outreach scholarship focused on child, family, and/or community literacy curricula and/or interventions.
  • Established record or experience in obtaining external sponsored funding.
  • Demonstrated or potential for leadership in graduate program development, including excellence in mentoring graduate students.
  • Experience or interest in the development of online, virtual learning.
