Detailed Job Description
The Department of Liberal Studies (DLS) in Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting August 2024. We seek applicants with a relevant doctoral degree and experience teaching English to D/HH students. The applicant should be fluent in American Sign Language, and have active program of scholarship in Applied Linguistics, Deaf Education, Second Language Acquisition or related field. ABD doctoral candidates with evidence of defended dissertation proposal will also be considered.
Department/College Description
DLS provides English, humanities, and social science courses to 1,150 deaf and hard-of-hearing students with varied levels of reading and writing preparation. We host an associate degree program in Applied Liberal Arts and a bachelor’s degree program in Community Development and Inclusive Leadership. Our department welcomes talented candidates who will provide inclusive and culturally responsive experiences for our domestic and international students using American Sign Language and English. The successful applicant will be creative, team-oriented, and eager to contribute to the growth of our curriculum and to the success of our students.
Required Minimum Qualifications
• Relevant doctoral degree** (e.g., Applied Linguistics, Deaf Education, Second Language Acquisition, etc.)
• Evidence of scholarship, as defined by the NTID Policy on Tenure and Simultaneous Promotion to Associate Professor (http://www.ntid.rit.edu/president/academic-affairs/college-policies)
• Currency in the fields of Applied Linguistics, Deaf Education, Second Language Acquisition, or related fields.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language
• At least two years of teaching experience (secondary or post-secondary, adult education, community education)
• Demonstrated ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences
**Note that if the successful applicant is ABD, they will begin their employment with lecturer status. The position will be converted to tenure track at the start of the contract year after the candidate has completed the degree. At that time, the probationary period for tenure review as specified in the letter of hire will begin.
