Assistant Professor, Political Science

The Department of Political Science at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in American Politics with a specialization in constitutional law. The position is expected to begin Fall 2014 and is open with regard to other fields and specializations. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. He or she will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.

Responsibilities include: Instruction, engaging in scholarly activity leading to publication, and participating in department and university service including student advisement. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in U.S. National Politics, Constitutional Law, and Civil Liberties as well as other courses related to fields of expertise. Candidates may be asked to teach courses in distance learning format.

Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Political Science at time of appointment. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, conditioned upon proof that the applicant's defense of his/her dissertation is scheduled prior to August, 2014. An ABD hire will limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum). The successful candidate will demonstrate both a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and a high potential for scholarship, as well as the ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications: An interest in conducting research with undergraduates and teaching U.S. National Politics as an online course are pluses.
