The University of Southern California seeks an accomplished, student-centered, creative, and dynamic leader as its next senior associate vice provost for student life who will collaborate with the vice president for student life to provide strategic organizational leadership and vision for the university student experience. The position will lead a team of executives cultivating a student experience that builds community and belonging, supports students in exploring and developing skills, and fosters a safe environment that promotes student well-being. The anticipated start date for the senior associate vice provost is summer 2024.
Founded in 1880, the University of Southern California (USC) is a leading comprehensive private research university located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. As a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities, it is recognized for its distinctive research and academic programs. In its comprehensive 2022 ranking, The Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education ranked USC 19th among more than 1,000 public and private universities. Among the top 25 schools, USC ranked 4th in engagement, which measures student sentiment on how their education prepares them for the real world.
An anchor institution in Los Angeles and a global center for the arts, technology, health, and international business, USC is a constellation of schools, centers, and institutes where some of the brightest minds, working together in a dynamic and collaborative environment, lead the way to the future of education and a healthier, more joyful, and sustainable Los Angeles and world. The university's six unifying values—integrity; excellence; diversity, equity, and inclusion; well-being; open communication; and accountability—are the cornerstone of USC's community. Faculty, staff, and students alike work to create an inclusive culture that furthers personal growth potential and societal progress while emphasizing ethical practices and collective trust. The university is home to over 47,000 students engaged in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. A quarter of the first-year class are the first in their family to attend college, two-thirds of all students receive financial aid, and 27 percent of the diverse student body are international students.
The Position
Reporting to the vice president for student life (vice president), the senior associate vice provost for student life (SAVP) works to expand opportunity within USC Student Life to support a welcoming community where all can thrive. The SAVP will directly oversee several areas core to the student experience, including community support and expectations, student development and residential life, equity and inclusion, and engagement operations.
The SAVP supervises four associate/assistant vice provosts to ensure organizational alignment with the mission and goals of USC Student Life. They lead a seasoned team of colleagues and recruit, develop, and mentor teams to ensure an excellent student experience grounded in well-being and success and to promote collaboration throughout the organization. As a leader in the university community, they embrace and lead the organization in exemplifying USC's unifying values. The SAVP is an on-site position that works closely with the vice president and chief of staff to implement the vision for the organization, prioritize weekly meetings and projects, and initiate movement on programs and services that impact all of USC Student Life. This senior leader will facilitate strong organizational communication, equitable and accessible best practices, and information transparency with the university community and stakeholders, including general counsel, public safety, academic programs, alumni affairs, advancement, government relations, and more.
