Lecturer of Technical German

Location: 366 Hardin Hall

Description

The Department of Languages at Clemson University invites applications for the position of Lecturer of Technical German, to start January 1 or August 15, 2024. This is a full- time, non-tenure track, annually renewable, nine-month teaching appointment with a benefits package. Additional summer pay may be available depending on student demand.

The successful candidate will teach four German courses per semester at the beginning, intermediate and 3rd year level (first through third year), including one course in Technical German per academic year. They will also contribute to the German program and to growing enrollment. Additionally, expertise in a technical field or industry experience and a strong interest in supporting the new Technical German Minor outside of the classroom is a must. The instructor is also expected to collaborate with colleagues across campus and seek and maintain contacts in the regional and international industry community.

"Languages for Technical Purposes" is a growing discipline in the US. Fully integrated Mechanical Engineering-German programs are highly sought after by students and endorsed by industry and businesses in the Upstate of South Carolina. As part of the Technical German Minor program, Clemson University is among the first institutions in the US to offer German-taught courses that fulfill requirements of an Engineering curriculum as early as the sophomore year (Math 2060 and 2080 in German). Additionally, in 2021 Clemson has offered the first course in the country fully dedicated to Technical German for Engineers and STEM, which is now offered every year. The new Instructor of Technical German will play a key role in supporting this newly created program.

Clemson University is an R1 institution and a highly selective public university. Clemson's beautiful campus is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and, by car, about 40 minutes from Greenville SC, a little over 2 hours from Asheville, NC, Charlotte NC, and Atlanta GA. In particular, Greenville boasts a thriving German community with numerous German and international businesses, while Atlanta is home to a German consulate which acts as a German cultural center in the South-East.
