Assistant Professor in Theater (Costume Design and Technology)

 

INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA invites applications for a tenure track position in the Department of Theater and Dance at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2014.  The Department offers a BA in Theater, and two Interdisciplinary Fine Arts Degrees in Musical Theater and Dance Arts.  The department produces a season which includes three plays, one musical and two dance concerts.  Our full-time faculty of nine, plus temporary faculty, teaches an average of 100+ majors, and share a commitment to teaching and learning. Our program is NAST accredited.  We actively participate in the KC/ACTF and other national and international activities, and seek expansion of programs across disciplines. Salary is competitive.

 

Responsibilities / Expectations:

 

  1. Teaching of costume technology, costume design, stage makeup, as well as a large lecture Introduction to Theater course for non-majors.
  2. Leading a costume studio with full-time shop supervisor, as well as supervision of costume construction and costume/makeup budgets and inventories for all mainstage theater and dance productions. 
  3. Designing costumes for mainstage theater and dance productions.
  4. Mentoring of student designers and production costume crews.
  5. Academic advisement.

 

Other duties will include the participation in the shared governance of the department and the university, and continued scholarly growth within the discipline. 

 

Qualifications:  By the time of appointment, the candidate must have an MFA in costume design or a PhD in a related field with significant professional costume design experience.  Relevant teaching experience in higher education is also required.  All candidates should have relevant experience designing for professional & academic productions.  Candidates should have experience working with and designing for dance companies (preferably modern dance).  A secondary expertise in an ancillary design area or in production management is advantageous but not required.  Additional professional costume design or fashion design expertise outside theater is also advantageous but not required.

 

Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during interview(s), which may include a teaching demonstration.  The successful candidate may be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites and/or provide instruction through distance education.
