Opening Details

Williams College Department of Dance is seeking to contract with a Costume Coordinator for our upcoming season of two concerts featuring multiple performing ensembles sharing the bill. Required tech and dress rehearsal dates are November 27 - December 1, 2023 (fall concert) and April 29 - May 3, 2024 (spring concert). Additional residency dates for pulling and fittings will be worked out between the Coordinator and the Costume Shop.

We produce high quality productions, generally involving a large number of student performers. The concerts feature faculty led ensembles and student choreographers specializing in African Dance and Music, Ballet, Contemporary and the college Step Team. The Coordinator will be self-directed and will prioritize pulling from stock; going through to assess, pull, organize and assign garments to performers. For any supplementary shopping/purchasing, the Coordinator will provide research images and links to be purchased by the Shop Supervisor.

Preferred applicants will:
  • Have experience pulling and organizing looks for diverse bodies.
  • Have hands-on alteration experience. Coordinator will be expected to assist with costume notes as necessary.
  • Be organized, flexible, and able to work independently and with the shop staff.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Coordinator must be proactive in managing communication with choreographers and will keep the shop up to date on all progress.
  • Be able to work simultaneously on looks for each performing group in order to meet process deadlines.
  • Experience working with students in a liberal arts environment.

The Costume Coordinator's fee is for the season and is based on the total number of performing groups involved. Housing will be provided while in residency on campus. Own transportation is a plus but is not required. The Coordinator will be required to complete a basic background check prior to commencing the assignment.

Dance experience is not necessary. Theater, Film, or Opera experience encouraged to apply. Interested contractors should send cover letter and resume to Kyle Yager, Dance Production Manager, kay1@williams.edu, by August 7, 2023.

The purpose of the Dance Department is to educate students in the physical disciplines, cultural traditions, and expressive possibilities of dance. We provide the opportunity to study and experience dance as technique, composition, history, theory, and performance in the context of a liberal arts education. Our ensembles study and perform throughout the academic year at the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance and at venues on and off campus.
