Postdoctoral Research Associate - Quantum Materials and Devices

About the Opportunity

SUMMARY

Northeastern University invites applications from outstanding candidates to fill one or more Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRA) positions in computational and experimental quantum materials and devices. The initial appointments will be for two years, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. These multidisciplinary positions will belong to Northeastern's broad Quantum Materials and Sensing Initiative (QMSI) that includes the Experiential Quantum Advancement Laboratories (EQUAL) located at Northeastern's Innovation Campus at Burlington, MA.

The PRAs will be closely involved in exciting research on various aspects of 2D and other quantum materials, and their modeling, synthesis, characterizations and applications. Projects will include computational discovery and experimental development of new quantum materials and their heterogeneous structures, demonstration and interpretation of their properties, and the development of related sensing devices and applications. Topological, magnetic, superconducting, 2D, and other novel quantum materials for advancing next generation sensing and detection will be of interest.

The PRAs will be expected to take full advantage of EQUAL's extensive experimental and computational research facilities to develop new methods and techniques. Experimental facilities of the EQUAL lab include MBE, PVD, CVD, XPS, PEEM, ARPES, Scanning NV magnetometry, Raman, Photoluminescence, AFM, and other state-of-the-art synthesis, microscopy, and spectroscopy tools. State-of-the art facilities for high-performance computing will be available through dedicated access to the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC).

PRAs will be expected to publish in top journals and make presentations at appropriate conferences, supervise research of undergraduate and graduate students assigned to them, assist in laboratory maintenance, assist with the preparation of grant proposals and reports, and take part in other day-to-day research activities.

Applicants should submit their full CVs and names and contact information of 3 references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position(s) are filled.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Initiating and executing independent experimental or computational/theoretical research projects under the broad guidance of the faculty supervisors.
  • Preparing research papers, making presentations, and assisting with preparing grant proposals, reports and other documents.
  • Helping with laboratory maintenance.
  • Supervising or assisting with research of graduate and undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field, with evidence of high-quality experimental or theoretical research demonstrated through publications and presentations, and strong oral and written communications skills.

For experimental PRAs, first-hand experience with one or more of the following techniques is strongly desirable: MBE, DC/AC magnetron sputtering, CVD and/or device fabrications; ARPES, XPS, PEEM, TEM, Raman, photoluminescence, NV magnetometry, AFM and/or STM.

For theory/computational PRAs, a broad understanding of quantum materials and the computational and/or theoretical techniques for modeling their properties, including light-matter interactions, is required. Experience in working with experimental programs is highly desirable.
