POSITION SUMMARY Under the general supervision of an Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is responsible for creating and fostering an environment that inspires success for all students through transformative experiences. The RLC will also serve as an educational community standards officer for their residential community and as a resource to the general campus community for issues of student and campus resident life. California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is a residential campus therefore developing relationships and community as well as a sense of belonging and socially just inclusion to enhance student learning is central to the work of this position.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:

Leadership Development and Supervision:
  • Directly supervise, develop, hold accountable and evaluate 10-20 Resident Advisors (RA) and other paraprofessional staff as appropriate.
  • Facilitate an environment of personal growth, leadership development and academic success through formal training sessions, one-on-one meetings, scheduled staff meetings and staff development opportunities (i.e. in-services).
  • Communicate departmental goals and expectations to support a sense of belonging within the residential community.
  • Support RAs individually and as a collective team to develop skills in relationship and community building, leadership, administration and achieving personal balance.
  • Provide RAs with community specific event planning and implementation support through oversight of programming budgets, purchasing supplies, and offering feedback for event proposals and marketing materials.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of Fall, and Spring, for RAs. Plan and facilitate various staff training workshops for both professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Plan and facilitate staff training workshops for both professional and paraprofessional staff (i.e. in team meetings, etc.) that result in innovative ways to create a sense of belonging.

Individual and Community Development:
  • Establish a positive atmosphere in the residential community that is conducive to student academic and
  • developmental success (i.e. financial balance outreach, and other support efforts).
  • Promote the development of inclusive individuals and communities that are socially just and supportive of all aspects of identity.
  • Provide support in the resolution of conflicts and encourage communication among staff and residents.
  • Develop strategies in line with the SHRL,Student Affairs and campus opportunities vision, mission and values to enhance residents' experiences while they live in the CSUMB residential community.
  • Create an environment through staff and interactions that strives to support the Otter Promise by providing introductory and continual support and connection.
  • Strategically create and implement large scale programming and support RAs with community specific programming efforts as outlined in their requirements.

Counseling and Advising:
  • Establish meaningful relationships with residents in the community and provide counseling when residents experience academic, personal, developmental and/or community difficulties.
  • Refer students to appropriate university and/or community resources.
  • Intervene and assist in the resolution of interpersonal and inter-group conflicts which may disrupt the normal routine of a residential community and student learning.
  • Provide informal individual and group counseling/agreements to resolve roommate, student or community conflicts.
  • Keep supervisor informed and update the database accordingly of all noteworthy incidents occurring in the residential community, providing additional follow-up with students as necessary.

Residential Learning and Development:
  • In conjunction with SHRL Assistant Directors for Learning and Assessment and Programming and Engagement, advise RAs on the development and implementation of learning strategies centered in the Residential Learning Outcomes (RLO) of communication, diversity and cultural competency, navigating systems, sustainability and wellbeing.
  • Facilitate or support Living Learning Communities (LLC) within their residential community. Academic focuses, specific identities, and personal interests are all showcased within CSUMB's LLC communities. Incorporation of faculty presence and campus/community partners should be integrated throughout efforts.
  • Cultivate the professional development of returning RAs, as they support the training of new paraprofessionals.

Administration:
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties, including but not limited to, managing communications, budgeting, providing reports, health and safety checks, check-in/out procedures, room transfers, assessing damage charges and sharing information with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Administrative duties include but are not limited to, scheduling, attending and facilitating meetings, prioritization, collecting student data via anecdotal or survey evidence, and may be required to make sound, data-driven decisions.
  • Respond to daily requests for information and assistance from SHRL staff, residents, residents' supporters and campus/community partners.
  • Prior to each summer term, the Residential Life team and Student Housing and Residential Life Leadership will assess student and departmental needs in order to determine appropriate summer responsibilities.

Crisis and Emergency Response/Community Standards:
  • Serve on a campus-wide evening, weekend, and campus closure 24/7, 365 on-call crisis response duty rotation alongside fellow live-in professional staff members.
  • Respond to a variety of needs such as crisis and emergency intervention, facility maintenance, health and safety concerns, support for the department's student staff members, as well as conflict resolution for on-campus residents.
  • Address University and SHRL policy and community standard violations when observed. This position will often complete Incident Reports (IR), Title IX/DHR, and Campus Security Authority (CSA) reports to support the University's reporting and compliance efforts.
  • Serve as Building Emergency Managers for assigned areas.
  • Serve as a primary community standards officer for community standards cases reported to SHRL.
  • Consult and partner with the department's lead Community Standards team member and Student
  • Conduct Administrator to develop sanctions balanced between educational and restorative actions.
  • Regular follow-up with residents regarding incidents and completion of sanctions will be often and may consist of measures to maximize student learning and development, ensure community safety and/or ensure the wellbeing of those involved (i.e. community emails, etc.).

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Identify issues or concerns within Residential Life, take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
  • Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus to best support students and SHRL.
  • Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues; working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to departmental and university-wide goals; solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, Google Drive, student information and community standards database); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations; the ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of Student Housing and Residential Life, as well as the greater University Corporation, and CSUMB organizations.

    Qualifications


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience:

    Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a job-related field

    AND

    Two years of experience in planning, coordinating or directing college-level activities for student services program or in a related field (live-in staff experience preferred such as a Graduate Resident Director or full-time Resident Director). Master's degree preferred.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Additional experience as live-in staff and Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning; and demonstrated technical literacy.

    This is a non-exempt position with a starting range of $22.50-24.00 per hour ($46,880-$49,920 annualized). Classification: Grade 4, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
