Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate degree in public health or an associated discipline. Candidates who are ABD will be considered. Candidates whose degree is in a related discipline must demonstrate academic experience and credentials to be considered applicable for designation as core public health faculty by accreditation standards.
  • Evidence of teaching and research in one of the core areas of public health (epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral science, health policy and management, and/or environmental health).

Description of the Department or Unit
The Public Health program is housed in the Department of Public Health and Exercise Science (PHES) and is located within the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS). PHES comprises nationally accredited and recognized programs including the Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health, and the Master of Science degree in Exercise Science. The Public Health program is currently accredited as a standalone Baccalaureate program by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), with plans to seek accreditation as a Public Health Program (PHP) upon the addition of a Master of Public Health (MPH)program which is anticipated to begin in Fall 2024 following final approval by the UNC system. The program currently supports nine faculty (five tenure or tenure-track) with diverse research and practice backgrounds. It also enjoys numerous strong, long-term relationships with regional health providers and public health agencies.

Appalachian State University’s Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities it serves through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach. BCHS supports almost3,400 students in nine undergraduate degree programs and seven graduate degree programs, organized into six departments: Nursing; Nutrition and Health Care Management; Public Health and Exercise Science; Recreation Management and Physical Education; Rehabilitation Sciences; and Social Work. The academic programs are located in the Holmes Convocation Centeron main campus in the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art, 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college supports the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services and has collaborative partnerships with the Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program, the Appalachian Regional Health System and numerous other health agencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Public Health program.
  • Conducting and maintaining an active line of research.
  • Participating in service activities for the department, university, and
    community.
  • Collaborating with community stakeholders and other professional
    organizations.
