About the College: The College of Science and Technology (www.usm.edu/science-technology) is one of six degree-granting colleges at Southern Miss with approximately 175 full-time faculty members spanning multiple campuses and educating more than 3,600 undergraduate and graduate students. The college implements the university's mission by building skills, fostering intellectual development, and making advances in science, technology and workforce implementation. The college houses eight departments (Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Coastal Sciences, Geography and Geology, Human Capital Development, Marine Science, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy); four schools (Computing, Construction, Criminal Justice, Polymers and High Performance Materials); the Center for Science and Mathematics Education, and the Health Care Pre-professional Office. The college offers 42 undergraduate degree programs and 59 graduate degree programs at the master's and doctoral levels. In fiscal year 2012, the college received approximately $30M in external funding.
Duties and Responsibilities: The dean is the academic and administrative leader of the college and reports to the provost. This position is located in Hattiesburg Mississippi and will begin July 1, 2014. Working with the faculty and university leaders, the dean will lead the creation of plans and strategies to enhance the college's stature. Moreover, the dean will play a key role in expanding the college's significant education, research and service linkages with the scientific and research communities of the state and the region.
Qualifications and Experience: Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in a STEM area or closely related field and credentials sufficient to be considered eligible for appointment to the rank of full professor and the awarding of tenure in the College of Science and Technology.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential,
as is a strong record of commitment to research and scholarship.
Successful applicants must be proven leaders with broad vision,
strong team-building skills, and the ability to collaborate with
multiple constituencies and to lead advancement activities on
behalf of the college.
Experience working with multi-campus sites and in developing cross-disciplinary programs is desirable.
