Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Associate Director of Applications & Reporting position. The Associate Director of Applications & Reporting is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $75,000 per year - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Associate Director of Applications & Reporting serves as the technical lead for Advancement's Slate database and is a core member of the Slate database team, a “Slate Captain.” They are responsible for programming user-requested enhancements in Slate, integrating new product releases into Amherst's Slate instance, security/user permissions, and assisting with creating data feeds to/from Slate and to/from Advancement's reporting warehouse. Additionally, they design, manage, and maintain queries and reports that support data-driven decisions across Advancement and act as an essential resource for users in translating and understanding Advancement's data and reports.
The person in this role is expected to work as part of a collaborative and inclusive team, including taking appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participating in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. In addition, all advancement staff members are required to support and staff key events such as Reunion, Homecoming, and Family Weekend. These events may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
This position is eligible to participate in the College's hybrid or remote work program. All remote work must be performed within one of the Amherst registered payroll states, which currently includes Massachusetts and Connecticut. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Application Development & Support
- Serves as technical lead for programming in Slate database.
Responsible for creating and maintaining Slate dashboards, forms,
and advising on procedures and processes for colleagues across
Advancement. Keeps up-to-date on enhancements to Slate.
- Works on data feeds in and out of Slate database and in and out
of Advancement data warehouse. Works with colleagues across campus
on data feeds into and out of Advancement systems and other campus
databases.
- As a “Slate Captain,” collaborates on key decision-making
regarding Slate data structures, processes and procedures, and
design with a focus on end-user needs.
- Manages security/user permissions for Advancement's 60+ staff
and other members of the campus community, including Senior Staff
and the Office of the President.
- Proactively identifies and resolves complex issues within the
Slate database, showcasing problem-solving skills critical for
optimizing database functionality.
- Monitors the Slate Advancement Support Slack channel,
addressing user inquiries or delegating to the appropriate staff
person.
Reporting and Training
- Designs queries in support of mailings, solicitations, and
analysis. Tests queries of other Advancement users for accuracy and
efficiency, and works with users to make improvements where
needed.
- Responds to data requests for Advancement as well as campus
partners.
- Convenes and manages the Slate and Data Entry User Groups, to
review data standards and best practices and answer reporting
questions.
- Serves as a resource across Advancement for queries in Access
and Slate. Provides query training to new and existing
users.
- Assists in the creation of reports out of the Advancement data
warehouse. Maintains and updates reports to meet business needs of
Advancement.
- Collaborates effectively with internal stakeholders,
understanding their unique data requirements and challenges, and
providing tailored solutions to meet their needs.
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor's Degree.
- 7+ years of demonstrated experience.
- Technology: SQL, experience working extensively in a relational
database.
- Strong organizational, time management, and written and verbal
communication skills.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, thoroughness, and
organization.
- Good interpersonal skills - ability to collaborate and work
effectively with a wide range of personalities and levels (from
technical to gift officers to Department Heads to admin
staff).
- Ability to work independently and/or work well with a team
depending on the situation.
- Comfortable learning and incorporating new technologies. Focus
on continuous improvement.
- Ability to synthesize information and set/suggest
policy.
- Dedication to excellence and quality, appreciation of customer
service.
- Commitment to or experience working with a diverse
community.
Preferred
- Technology: Experience with data visualization tools, SnapLogic
or similar integration tool, JavaScript a plus.
- Previous experience in campaign reporting, gift accounting or
fundraising administration in higher education or a non-profit
organization.
