Job Description

The Manager, Student Development is responsible for empowering a team of coaches to reach their full potential through quality coaching, goal setting and focus on NAU Online student success. The lead role requires the ability to adapt to change and have a sense of urgency and the confidence to handle a variety of challenges. The Manager, Student Development serves as a key contributor in the implementation of wide-ranging initiatives to increase student retention and graduation rates. The Manager, Student Development creates and directs administrative processes, procedures, and practices to ensure proactive, consistent communication with students and colleagues. This position will also partner and collaborate with university staff in academic units, academic advising, colleges, enrollment services units and others across the university. A full commitment to the success of the business and high standards of achievement is expected in this position.

Program Management - 30%
  • Builds rapport and relationships with individuals and groups utilizing an outgoing, poised, and persuasive communication style.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to provide a comprehensive service approach, address opportunities to improve services for the student experience and to bolster student success.
  • Monitors production and quality of student/coach interactions evaluating opportunities to benchmark, enhance and improve the student experience.
  • Oversees and resolves product or service problems by clarifying the complaint; determines the cause; selects and explains the best solution; expedites corrections or adjustments; follows up to ensure satisfactory resolution.

Supervisor & Team Support - 30%
  • Provides oversight for program operations to ensure program goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time and funding limitations, and grant specifications.
  • Ensure programs are administered in accordance with all pertinent regulations, policies, and grant guidelines.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of four (4) Student Development Coordinators.
  • Addresses all aspects of staffing and professional development in a highly consistent manner.
  • Cultivates an environment that empowers staff to be proactive as they deliver attentive customer service and build supportive relationships vital to student success.
  • Uses a leadership style that is firm, and goal oriented that motivates, trains, and engages others in an enthusiastic way.
  • Provides direction to staff including assignments, activities, and schedules to ensure the delivery of excellent service required to meet/exceed departmental goals.
  • Trains Student Development Coordinators.

Student Support - 20%
  • Works with students in one-on-one interactions and in group settings to overcome obstacles to their academic success and to achieve their educational goals.
  • Develops meaningful relationships with students based on empathy, compassion, and appreciative, developmental, and intrusive advising approaches.
  • Conducts proactive outreach and intervention activities with students, selecting those strategies where there is a strong likelihood of making a difference in student persistence and academic success. Establishes goals, executes progression plans, effectively delegates, and resolves general issues and concerns of students.
  • Develop, plan, promote, execute, and evaluate programming designed to encourage engagement, growth, and persistence seeking to provide a full and well-rounded university experience.
  • Handles highly sensitive and/or complex issues with students and/or parents.

Caseload Management - 15%
  • Maintains accurate and detailed contact notes, services, contacts, activities, track student performance, and develop reports on the academic success and graduation of target populations.
  • Provides updates/reporting on the progress and challenges of the students within the caseload as needed.
  • Gathers statistics for grant writing, annual performance reports, and monthly progress summaries in support of programs.

Other - 5%
  • Able to review, analyze, and pull insights from data.
  • Coordinates and assumes other duties or projects as assigned or directed.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate bachelor's degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • 1-2 years of management or supervisory experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of supervisory/leadership experience in a customer service/support environment.
  • Experience in career counseling, academic advising, teaching or related types of coaching and counseling.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $54,779 - $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
