The University of Chicago seeks applicants for the Faculty Services & Scholarly Communications (FSSC) Librarian at the DAngelo Law Library (DLL). 

 

DLL supports the scholarship, teaching and research activities of the University of Chicago Law School community, which consists of approximately 670 J.D. and LL.M. students and 80 full-time faculty members and other scholars.  DLL is committed to providing the highest quality of service to the Law School faculty, students and staff and also to supporting the work of other members of the University community.

 

Reporting to the Associate Law Librarian for User Services, the FSSC Librarian coordinates all library services to the Law School faculty, including reference, research, and access.  Supports data-driven faculty research, developing and coordinating the necessary expertise to support this work within DLL and the Law School.  Advises colleagues and Law faculty on issues of scholarly communication including commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, open access initiatives, copyright and rights management, and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information. In cooperation with colleagues, the faculty, and the Law School communications department, the Librarian coordinates and manages the faculty scholarship database and repository and works with Library-wide colleagues on the development of the Universitys institutional repository.  Provides scheduled reference and research service primarily to the law school and university communities and teaches student classes as part of the DLLs instruction program.  Serves on DLL and Library-wide committees, and participates in a wide range of professional activities and collaborative initiatives in local, regional and national professional scholarly organizations.

 

Qualifications:

Required:  Graduate library degree from an ALA accredited library school and a JD from an ABA accredited law school; previous experience working in a law library; demonstrated experience with legal research materials, techniques and strategies;  substantial knowledge of Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law and other law subscription services and Internet resources; teaching or training experience; awareness of current issues and trends regarding scholarly communication, institutional repositories and rights management; experience using library systems and Windows software; familiarity with web authoring and development tools and technologies; experience with creating and maintaining web pages; understanding of and interest in  database design, management and data manipulation; demonstrated ability to work with and support a highly-productive and talented patron group; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with colleagues and work effectively in a team-oriented environment; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; strong organizational, analytical and planning skills; and the ability to assess and manage priorities; and strong public service philosophy and a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

 

Preferred:  Previous experience working in an academic law library; understanding of digital library infrastructure, issues and trends, and familiarity with metadata standards, schemas, best practices and applications; demonstrated experience in project management; familiarity with data-driven research tools and methodologies in law or social science disciplines; working knowledge of Microsoft Access, SQL or other relational database platforms.
