Job Summary
The Associate Vice President of Academic Success directs division and departmental operations, initiatives, and activities and is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies that support increases in retention and graduation of undergraduate students at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the position is a member of the Academic Advisory Council. The Associate Vice President works closely with administrators, faculty and staff to promote best practices in student success and oversees first- and second-year experiences, bridge programs, professional academic advising, and student academic support services and works collaboratively with various units on student placement, new student orientation, among other areas. The position has a considerable role in developing and supporting the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises staff, students and faculty in areas of professional
academic advising, academic success services such as tutoring and
mentoring,
- Engenders trust of subordinates, peers, and
supervisors.
- Researches, develops, implements and evaluates plans to support
improved retention and graduation rates.
- Develops, implements and reports on strategies that foster
improved faculty-student relationships, including early alert
support.
- Develops tracking and reporting systems for collecting,
analyzing and disseminating academic success reports to various
constituents, including state agencies, and make recommendations
for improvement.
- Works with campus leaders and faculty to determine the best
placement methods for students in order to ensure course
success.
- Monitors and supports scholastic probation and enforced
withdrawal processes.
- Oversees selected grants that relate to academic services and
supporting activities.
- Works closely with the Registrar, deans and faculty to ensure
mid-term and attendance reporting efforts, early alert and
follow-through, and that other student support mechanisms in the
LMS are utilized.
- Drafts and administers relevant University policies,
regulations, and rules related to academic success.
- Builds community for undergraduate students and faculty through
various ongoing and new initiatives, including through supervision
of assistant/associate deans supporting incoming freshmen
cohorts.
- Works with others to develop and implement a strategic plan for
student success across the University's colleges through receipt
and use of faculty, staff, and student input.
- Manages fiscal resources effectively and write grants or other
proposals with aims of supporting student success
efforts.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Masters Degree.
- Ten years of experience in higher education, including at least
three years in a leadership role with supervisory
experience.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work cooperatively with
others.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain
confidentiality.
- Ability to use Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet
software.
- Experience with budgeting or grant management.
Preferred Qualifications
- An academic and research profile that supports an appointment
as an associate or professor in one of the disciplines at the
University.
- Use of Banner and experience with sound use of social
media.
Location
The University is located in historic Kingsville, a friendly, safe city of 25,000 that is the home of the legendary King Ranch. Corpus Christi (population: ~350,000) and its beaches are just 40 miles to the northeast, and the border with Mexico is 120 miles to the south at Brownsville or 119 miles to the west at Laredo. The region boasts world-class fishing and birding, access to the longest, undeveloped barrier island in the world (Padre Island National Seashore), and a friendly community rich in history and culture.
