The Senior Assistant Director for Social Innovation and Philanthropy reports to the UCSC Director/Associate Dean of Students in the University with primary responsibility for developing, coordinating, and evaluating initiatives for students to think about new strategies, concepts, and organizations that meet social needs of all kinds, such as labor conditions, government, education, community development, and public health. Social innovation will also be related to social entrepreneurship, corporate community engagement, and public and social service. Initiatives in this portfolio will prepare students with the knowledge and experience to respond to the challenges of a rapidly changing world. They will also allow students to explore how social innovation can take place within government, the for-profit sector, and the nonprofit sector, and how cross-sector collaborative social innovation can be facilitated.


The Senior Assistant Director will establish and manage a diverse portfolio that builds on UChicagos commitment to rigorous analysis in understanding organizations, markets, and public policy. S/he will be charged with developing UCSCs overall strategy so students gain vast exposure to issues of importance to the social sector while supporting social enterprises that wish to apply proven business practices to strategic decision making and organizational management. In particular, students with an interest in nonprofit and social sectors will learn how to enhance the efficiency and impact of these organizations through research, data collection, communication, and education.


In addition, the Senior Assistant Director will support students to acquire skills in nonprofit management, strategic planning, grant-making, and fundraising by drawing on the knowledge and expertise found in nonprofit organizations and philanthropic institutions in the Chicago area. The Senior Assistant Director will design programs to help students better understand the role of giving in society and promote interest in philanthropy. Through substantive and immersive programming, students will gain a solid understanding of the philanthropic system, particularly the relationship between foundations and public policy development.



  • Graduate degree, particularly an M.B.A., is strongly preferred
  • Minimum five years of work experience designing and developing programs and initiatives focused on social innovation and philanthropy
  • Minimum seven years of work experience in social service programs, working with community organizations, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies
  • Minimum seven years of experience leading an organization or serving on senior leadership team providing strategic direction and vision; supervising staff; managing budget and fundraising; developing, implementing, and evaluating projects and programs
