Position Summary:
Willamette University welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music to begin in August 2024. A DMA or PhD is required by the start of the Fall 2024 term.

The Department of Music seeks a performer-composer with a primary interest in the intersections between technology and musical performance. Professional and creative focus in non-Western music, popular music, and/or new & improvised music preferred, but not required. Responsibilities include coursework in digital music and desktop/recording studio production, oversight of Willamette's cutting-edge Ford Hall Digital Music Lab and Recording Studios, and contributions to the core Music and general education curricula. We seek candidates with a commitment to the highly personalized educational environment of a small liberal arts university, to exploring interdisciplinary and boundary-crossing creative work in the classroom and beyond, and to mentoring undergraduate students both individually and collectively toward continued growth as musicians.

The Ford Digital Music Labs and Recording Studios comprise a suite of three rooms housed in the lower level of Ford Hall on Willamette's primary campus in Salem, Oregon: a digital music lab with sixteen Mac-based desktop production stations, a dedicated mixing room, and a full multi-track recording studio with a large live room and separate control room. Current classes offered in these spaces include a general education Creating Music with Technology course, Music & Sound for Visual Media, Desktop Music Production, Recording Studio Music Production, Live Audio Reinforcement, and an electronic/improvised music performance ensemble. Recent projects utilizing the studio include four professionally released compact discs of original music by Willamette faculty and guests, as well as an ongoing cooperative between College of Arts & Sciences music students and Pacific Northwest College of the Arts Animated Arts students to design sound and music for animated short films each semester. The successful candidate will have further opportunities to collaborate creatively with colleagues in the Department of Music, at PNCA, and across the university at large.

Willamette promotes a teacher-scholar-artist model for its faculty: the successful candidate for this position will first and foremost have the capacity to be an excellent teacher, but is also expected to have active professional performance credentials and be a leader in their field. Our tenure-track faculty teach the equivalent of five-six undergraduate courses per year, advise students, research and/or perform in their fields, and engage in rotating service to department, college, and university. All College of Arts & Sciences professors are expected to teach non-majors as well as majors and to contribute to the General Education curriculum.

Willamette is a small, highly selective private university of 2500 students, 1550 of whom are enrolled in the undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences, which is committed to providing students with a well-rounded liberal arts education. The remaining students are enrolled in the Willamette College of Law, the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, the School of Computing and Information Sciences, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, which has both undergraduate and graduate students studying at its urban campus in downtown Portland.

Willamette believes that a diverse and inclusive community is essential to achieving academic excellence; accordingly, we seek candidates with demonstrated potential for growth and success as teachers and scholars, and whose professional and student-centered work will further inclusivity and diversity at Willamette. The College of Arts & Sciences is proud to enroll a substantial number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students of color. Over the past four years, 24% of our students were first-generation; 24% were Pell-eligible; and 33% identified as African American, Hispanic/LatinX, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multiracial.

All University positions require that candidates submit to a criminal conviction record check prior to hire. Conviction does not automatically preclude candidates from being hired. Nature of conviction will be considered relative to the duties of the position.

You will need to upload the following documents as part of your application materials in the "My Experience" section labeled Resume:

  • Letter of application describing your qualifications, interest in the position, and vision for engaging undergraduate music students in a liberal arts context
  • Curriculum vitae with current references
  • A statement (500 word maximum) describing ways you can contribute to the university's mission of promoting an equitable, diverse, and inclusive campus
  • An artist's statement (500 word maximum) addressing your professional/creative output and identity
  • A PDF with links to recent (within the last five years) recordings—live or studio-based—of three contrasting selections, at least one of which must include video.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Position will remain open until filled; applications should be received by February 19, 2024 for full consideration.

If you have questions about the position, please contact Dr. James Miley at jmiley@willamette.edu
