Northeastern University's Roux Institute in Portland Maine

The Roux Institute is one of 13 campuses within Northeastern University's global university system. Its mission is to catalyze economic development throughout Maine and the surrounding region by helping people and organizations to develop technical and human competencies that help them to thrive and grow.

We do this work in partnership with others - with our accomplished faculty and staff and an exciting community of graduate-level learners and startup founders. And in close collaboration with more than 160 organizations throughout Maine.

The Roux itself is a special and important partnership between Barbara and David Roux, the Harold Alfond Foundation, and Northeastern University. Launched in January 2020 to build talent and drive innovation in Portland, Maine, we fulfill our mission by delivering graduate education aligned with the needs of industry; applied research in artificial intelligence, digital engineering, human-data interaction, and advanced life sciences; and experiential entrepreneurship programming to help startup founders grow, launch, and sustain new businesses.

Position Summary

The Senior Director (SD) for Talent Solutions & Career Advancement works with Northeastern colleagues, learners, and representatives of the university's many corporate and community partners to administer and scale the Roux Institute's diverse experiential learning portfolio.

The SD and her/his/their team operate Northeastern's signature co-op program throughout Maine and the surrounding region by developing personalized, experience-driven professional development action plans with every Roux Institute learner and graduate. They coach, guide, and support the university's Maine-based learners and graduates to pursue career objectives. Additionally, the SD and her/his/their team will work with university partners to create and leverage customize talent solutions that meet the talent and growth objectives of their organizations.

The SD is a key member of the Roux Institute's management team and collaborates with others to shape the long-term direction of the institute, foster innovation, develop teams, and ensure operational excellence. The successful candidate will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities, develop and execute strategic initiatives, achieve sustainable growth, and enhance the institute's market position and value proposition.

The successful candidate will be a highly creative self-starter able to work in a dynamic and innovative educational organization, and able to identify and intensively integrate experiential learning opportunities throughout the academic portfolio at the Institute and the across the spectrum of learners served by the Roux Institute.

Qualifications

A master's degree or terminal degree in a relevant field is required. Seasoned business acumen and strategic leadership abilities, with the capacity to envision and execute transformative initiatives.

Demonstrated experience in managing complex operations and implementing new programs and services. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships, influence stakeholders, and foster collaboration.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities and circumstances.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Cross-Functional Leadership. Northeastern's success in Maine and the evidence of our impact manifests through the success of graduates, learners, partners, and team members. To fulfill the Roux Institute's mission, all members of the organization prioritize the following, cross-functional areas of emphasis. Working closely with others to realize these important strategic objectives is fundamental to the SD's responsibilities, leadership, and expected impact.
  • Integration of the institute's learning, research, entrepreneurship, and partnership efforts to differentiate, fuel innovation and drive growth. Development of new audiences to yield enrollment, entrepreneurship, and revenue impact, enabled by new products and driven by new partnerships. Refined operational efficiency and talent development to strengthen our resiliency and build the most diverse, inclusive workforce in Maine.

1) Administer the Roux Institute's diverse experiential learning portfolio.

The SD and her/his/their team lead and operate Northeastern's signature experiential education programs throughout Maine by developing personalized, experience-based action plans for and with every Roux Institute learner and graduate. The SD works closely with faculty and other colleagues to develop and steward a rich, diverse portfolio of experiential projects, service learning, and co-op opportunities. This work enhances the quality of the Northeastern learning experience, provides differentiating experiences to benefit learners and graduates, and helps the university's many partners to achieve ambitious talent, growth, and in-Maine retention objectives.

2) Personnel and operational management.

The SD oversees the day-to-day operations and development of the institute's experiential education team, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of relevant experiential programming (e.g., projects, co-ops, service learning, custom talent solutions, etc.), sound financial management, and leadership. The SD fosters a culture of innovation and excellence, promoting a positive work environment and nurturing and developing talent within the team.

The SD monitors progress, evaluates outcomes, and adapts strategies as needed to ensure successful execution. The SD continuously reviews and improves operational processes to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and maximize resource utilization.

The SD works closely with the CAO and the institute's Director of Finance, to develop and manage the relevant budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic priorities. The SD identifies and secures funding and revenue sources to support the growth and sustainability of the institute.

3) Develop and lead a sustainable Talent Solutions program for the benefit of learners, graduates, and partners.

The SD and her/his/their team work with university partners and members of the institute's leadership team to devise, implement, and leverage customized talent solutions to realize partners' growth and talent objectives. Additionally, the SD leads and manages a team that coaches, guides, and supports the university's Maine-based learners and graduates to pursue career objectives.

The SD works closely with the institute's leadership and partnership teams - and with members of the institute's faculty - to identify and implement experiential learning and partnership opportunities. The SD collaborates with others to develop and implement new strategies and programming to fuel growth.

This is expected to be a self-sustained, revenue generating role.

4) Performance Tracking and Reporting

The SD establishes performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the progress of strategic initiatives, operational efficiency, effectiveness, and growth objectives of relevant teams and programs. The SD prepares regular reports and presentations for the university's executive team, board of directors, and other key stakeholders, providing data-driven insights and recommendations.
