The University of Virginia invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Architecture.

The Dean of the School of Architecture is a position of intellectual and administrative leadership of a vibrant and productive community in a public university, situated institutionally and architecturally in one of the most cherished cultural landmarks in American history. The successful candidate, whether in practice or academe, must demonstrate the leadership necessary to maintain and strengthen the School’s national and international standing, to promote academic excellence, to develop and enhance the School’s resources, and to inspire faculty, staff, and students to continue to build an outstanding institution. The successful candidate must possess a record of accomplishment in scholarship and/or professional practice sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full Professor in one of the departments of the School of Architecture.

The School of Architecture is at one of the most productive moments in its history; it is poised to forge a new future with many recently hired faculty members, including two department chairs. The School is home to top-ranked graduate programs and established strengths in undergraduate education, a new PhD program, outstanding facilities and resources for teaching and research, a diverse faculty and staff, and collaborative engagement across the four departments (Architectural History, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Environmental Planning). It aspires to academic leadership in an age when potentials and challenges in the constructed environment are in the process of global redistribution. It is dedicated to preparing students for life beyond the University, with a global reach. It is in this context that the School has established a strong record of interdisciplinary collaborations with academic units across the University on research, teaching, and academic community engagement projects. The School of Architecture stands committed to the goals of a top-ranked public university in its social, political, and environmental responsibilities and is enthusiastic about its pursuit of the insights, impacts, and pleasures of knowledge.
