Job Description

The Health Sciences Department in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) seeks a full-time Associate Professor/Program Director of Public Health to begin Fall of 2024. TAMIU is a growing university of over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant bilingual and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. For more information, visit www.tamiu.edu.

This is a tenure-track position. Primary duties will include:
  • Teaching, advising and administrative responsibilities that will vary and be contingent on programmatic needs.
  • Evaluating students' progress in coursework and clinical experience.
  • Demonstrating scholarly productivity through grants and publications in refereed journals and attendance at professional conferences and meetings.
  • Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the curriculum yearly.
  • Planning new program offerings and course assignments to faculty.
  • Collaborating with public health partners and staff so the presence of students and their activities are supportive of the agency/organization goals and needs.


Teaching assignments may include day, evening, and weekend courses. A reduced load (2-2) is provided to allow the new hire to conduct duties of program director and focus on publishing research in Public Health or closely related areas. Duties also include; Working with faculty to develop syllabi and content for related courses; Serving and participating in college and university committees; Providing service to the community through participation in the planning and presentation of various programs focused on promoting the increased well-being of the community; Demonstrating strong community engagement, working with community-based organizations and addressing health care disparities in public health; Supervising field-based students or student internship when needed; and Performing other duties as designated by the Chair of the Health Sciences Department or the Dean of the CONHS.

This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must hold a doctorate in the field of public health or in a related field, from an accredited university. The master's degree must be in public health. Candidate must have at least three years of teaching experience in a public health program with administrative experience of at least a year in higher education.

We desire candidates who: (a) have a strong record of or potential for sustained publication in peer-reviewed journals (commensurate with experience at the Associate Professor level), (b) established track record of securing external grant funding, (c) have a strong desire to work with first-generation students, (d) and have the ability to teach in areas that complement or strengthen our undergraduate program.

Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.
