About the Opportunity

About Northeastern

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston, Arlington (Virginia), Charlotte (North Carolina), Miami, London (UK), Portland (Maine), Oakland, San Francisco, Seattle, Silicon Valley, Toronto (Canada), Vancouver (Canada), and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 250 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in health, public health, psychosocial, and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs. The Bouve College of Health Sciences comprises 4 schools with 8 departments:
  • School of Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences (Departments of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Medical Sciences, and Physical Therapy, Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences);
  • School of Community Health and Behavioral Sciences (Departments of Applied Psychology and Health Sciences);
  • School of Nursing;
  • School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (Departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy and Health System Sciences)

The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) and its nine tenure units are the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts, an innovative framework of integrated study and experiential opportunities. The college's 17 schools, departments, and programs, with disciplines ranging from economics, sociology, and political science, to history, English and international affairs, to name a few - form an interdisciplinary group of scholars with global perspectives and a culture of inclusion. The expert faculty connects liberal arts education with the challenges of our time, fostering ethical reasoning and critical thought, with attention to the enduring significance of history, literature, and culture. Through its research, teaching, and engagement missions, the college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and partners around the globe. CSSH is strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia.

Cross-disciplinary research programs are strongly encouraged within the two participating Colleges, and across the University.

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University is seeking applications for two full-time Associate/Full Professor tenure line faculty positions for scholars whose research is focused on Health Equity, to be located at Mills College at Northeastern University in Oakland, California. This opportunity invites innovative scholars to be a part of an evolving research environment within a campus that carries a rich tradition of championing equity, social justice, and leadership. The selected candidates will play a crucial role in bridging the Oakland campus's historic focus on social justice with the dynamic research culture of Northeastern. While both positions are in Oakland, the tenure home for one position will be in the Bouve College of Health Sciences, and the other in the College of Social Sciences & Humanities.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree, an active and successful research program delving deep into issues of health equity and be committed to the education of our students through teaching excellence and service. We welcome applicants studying topics across many diverse disciplines within the broad umbrella of health equity, utilizing data-driven and theory-based methodologies. Preference will be given to candidates engaged in applied research and data collection. Potential collaborative research areas among the existing faculty of the two colleges include environmental health, environmental social science, epidemiology, health policy, health economics, sociology, health informatics, and other health and social science fields. Applicants appropriate for the rank of Assistant Professor will not be considered for these positions.

Our tenure and promotion process values collaborative research and teamwork. Hires will be mentored for success, with mentoring teams and group guidance. In addition, a strong and effective faculty development strategy is part of the Northeastern institutional mission. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development office works in conjunction with the Office of Research Development (ORD), the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), and University Decision Support (UDS) to provide programs and trainings to further develop and support a thriving faculty.
