Professor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Engineering and Technology at Southern Utah University (SUU) invites applications for a professor position within the Mechanical Engineering program. This is a full-time faculty position to begin August 2024 and is open to candidates with either a Master's degree (for a non-tenure-track appointment) or a Ph.D. (for a tenure-track appointment) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. The position will be at the SUU campus in Cedar City, Utah. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment and ability to teach at the undergraduate level. Position includes benefits that may include relocation expenses to hired candidates for on-site employment.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Date of first consideration: 12/15/2023

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate engineering courses, use of effective teaching strategies, curriculum development, and mentorship of students.
  2. Additional responsibilities include scholarly activity, active participation on service committees, and other duties as needed to support a robust and dynamic environment for student learning.
  3. Experience with accreditation is a plus.
  4. Faculty are expected to provide quality educational experiences for major and non-major students taking their classes and to maintain a student-centered learning environment.
  5. Non-tenure-track faculty teach 30 credit hours per year (4-5 courses per semester), and tenure-track faculty teach 24 credit hours per year (3-4 courses per semester).
  6. Faculty are generally expected to teach in a face-to-face format, but limited opportunities may exist for hybrid or online teaching modalities.
  7. Although Southern Utah University is primarily a teaching institution, tenure-track faculty have an expectation to engage collaboratively with students and/or peers on scholarly activity that results in peer-reviewed publications.
  8. No such expectation exists for non-tenure-track faculty.
  9. Faculty actively participate and collaborate with the department to enhance and maintain a robust Mechanical Engineering curriculum based on continual program evaluation from internal review, industry advisory board feedback, student feedback, and accreditation review input.
  10. Faculty will be expected to participate fully in accreditation review and program improvement activities.
  11. All faculty must complete service activities within the department, college, and university.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  1. Master's or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field (degree determines whether appointment is non-tenure-track or tenure-track). Note: ABD applicants may be considered for tenure-track appointment if expected degree completion is within one year of the anticipated start date.
  2. Commitment and ability to deliver quality instruction for basic engineering courses (such as statics, dynamics, strength of materials).
  3. Commitment and ability to deliver quality instruction for one or more advanced areas of engineering such as fluid mechanics, thermal science, manufacturing, engineering design, computational analysis (CFD, FEM, etc.) or mechatronics/robotics.
  4. Familiarity with computer software commonly used in engineering design and analysis.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with faculty, staff, and students.
  6. Evidence of research/scholarly activity for tenure-track applicants.
