COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Salary Range: Yearly Salary of $80,693 - $113,724 (23/24 Faculty Salary Schedule); Placement within this range is determined by teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees.     Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging individual with a love for astronomy and desire to impart that passion to our general education students using innovative instructional methods. This is a full-time, regular contract position in the Earth and Space Sciences Department at Santa Rosa Junior College on the Santa Rosa campus. The position begins Fall Semester, August 2024. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

  • Provide excellent instruction and support to students, which may include evening, weekend, online or hybrid, and/or off-campus assignments.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.

    DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
    The Earth and Space Sciences Department offers courses in astronomy, environmental science, geography, geology, and meteorology. Classes are offered in person during the day and evening at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses, and in hybrid or fully online format. The department serves transfer students, associate degree students, vocational students, and general interest students from the community. We currently have five contract instructors and five associate instructors across our disciplines.

    Astronomy faculty offer short-term field classes on weekends at an off-campus dark-sky observing site. Students and instructors utilize small aperture telescopes, digital SLR cameras and a variety of lenses to conduct astrophotography and observational exercises during lab courses. Santa Rosa Junior College has a 100-seat full-dome planetarium that is often used to enhance lecture and lab courses. We are in the process of renovating the planetarium for public outreach.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Required:
    Master's Degree in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics
    OR Bachelor's Degree in Physics or Astronomy AND Master's Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics
    OR the equivalent
    OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructor's Credential in Astronomy, or Astro Physics.

    A sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Preferred:

    • Upper division or graduate course work, research experience, and/or teaching experience in Astronomy
    • Experience using telescopes with students or the public
    • Planetarium experience, or willingness to learn to use this equipment to engage students
    • Experience developing curriculum and assessing Student Learning Outcomes
    • Training in best practices for online learning and/or demonstrated enthusiasm and ability to design and teach high quality courses using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System
    • Experience implementing equity-minded pedagogy in a diverse learning environment to community college students.
