Description

Clemson University invites applications and nominations for the Emily Peek Wallace '72 Director of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. The individual who holds this leadership position will serve as the executive officer of the School and report directly to the Dean of the College of Science. Candidates are expected to merit the rank of professor with tenure, have an internationally recognized record of scholarship, and possess significant leadership experience.

The School seeks a director excited to provide leadership with shared governance in areas of (1) developing a strategic vision, goals, and implementation plan for the School that aligns with Clemson Elevate (Clemson University's strategic plan) and Accelerate Science (College of Science's strategic plan); (2) recruiting, developing, and retaining outstanding faculty, postdocs, doctoral students, and staff; (3) expanding external research funding; (4) increasing student success and closing success gaps in gateway courses; (5) strengthening inclusive excellence; (6) enhancing existing academic programs and developing new relevant programs and/or degrees; and (7) establishing strategic industry partnerships. Additionally, the Director will serve on the College's senior leadership team.

The Director is expected to demonstrate outstanding fiscal acumen in both strategic allocation of existing resources and expanding entrepreneurial revenues. The Director will work together with the Dean and the Director of Development to cultivate external support to advance the school.

About the School:

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences harnesses faculty expertise across the areas of algebra and discrete mathematics, analysis, computational mathematics, operations research, mathematical statistics and probability, and applied statistics and data science to advance the University's discovery mission and provide strong educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The School offers B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in mathematical sciences in addition to recent new programs including an online M.S. in data science and analytics in partnership with the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, and a B.S. in data science that is expected in 2024 in partnership with the School of Computing.

The faculty have achieved national recognition in a number of areas from pure and applied research to program and classroom innovation. The School is housed in the College of Science and is home to 101 full-time faculty organized in three divisions (Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research, and Mathematics and Statistics Education), 6 staff, 100 graduate students, and 200 undergraduate students. The School offers ~62k student credit hours annually and has an operating budget of $14M. Competitive external funding for FY22 was $2M. The leadership team in the School includes three division leads, two associate directors, and two assistant directors. The unique breadth of the School strengthens our excellence in discovery, learning, and engagement.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have an earned doctorate in applied mathematics, data and decision science, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or a related field and have a demonstrated international reputation for excellence in research. Additionally, candidates should hold the rank of professor at the time of appointment or demonstrate a professional appointment consistent with appointment to professor with tenure in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. It is expected that candidates will have secured significant federally competitive funding and have an awareness of the federal grant landscape including NSF, NIH, DOD, and others.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong record of strategic vision, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to strengthening the University's mission of discovery, learning, and engagement at a public R-1 institution. Strong candidates will have experience proactively supporting and engaging multidisciplinary and diverse teams as well as effectively managing and engaging multiple internal and external stakeholder groups.
