Sr. IT Security Analyst or IT Security Architect

The Information Security and Policy Office (ISPO) at the University of Iowa, is seeking to fill an IT Security Architect position. The successful candidate functions under the direction of the University Chief Information Security Officer. As a member of the technical workgroup of ISPO, the individual filling this position will assist with security services delivery and support, using a variety of skills in networking, system administration, user support, and security analysis.  This team of analysts is responsible to monitor the university data network, detect and respond to information security issues, perform security assessments, assist with educational programs, as well as sharing responsibility for tuning and management of the infrastructure providing these security services. Considerable interaction with IT staff and other university personnel will require excellent interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to document.

This position will be filled as a Sr. IT Security Analyst (PIE2) or IT Security Architect (PIE3) based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES

  • Campus network monitoring and intrusion      detection system support
  • Computer security incident response and      triage functions
  • Analyzing security of systems, and performing      assessments
  • Security information (log) management      functions
  • Performing network vulnerability assessments
  • Developing documentation and resources, and      providing user consultation
  • Some 24x7 on-call support

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

  • A Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet this minimum requirement.


PROFICIENCY LEVELS are defined as:

  • Basic - Uses basic understanding of the field to perform job duties; may need some guidance on job duties; applies learning to recommend options to address unusual situations (as noted below in requirements).
  • Working - Successfully completes diverse tasks of the job; applies and enhances knowledge and skill in both usual and unusual issues; needs minimal guidance in addressing unusual situations (as noted below in requirements). This proficiency level typically applies to the Sr. IT Security Analyst (PIE2) .
  • Extensive - Performs without assistance; recognized as a resource to others; able to translate complex nuances to others; able to improve processes; focus on broad issues (as noted below in requirements). This proficiency level typically applies to the requirements of the IT Security Architect (PIE3).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS for Sr. IT Security Analyst (PIE2):

  • Experience with systems administration, network engineering, and/or security analysis (typically 1-3 years) including supporting and managing related technologies
  • Workinglevel proficiency with:
    • Knowledge and experience with networking concepts, protocols, and services
    • Knowledge and experience in setup, maintenance, and security of Windows operating systems
      • Demonstrates skill in technical problem determination and analyzing system specifications

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff
  • Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; technically curious and self-motivated

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS for the IT Security Architect (PIE3) (in addition to PIE2 requirements):

  • Experience with systems administration, network engineering, and/or security analysis (typically 3-5 years) including supporting and managing related technologies
  • Extensivelevel proficiency with:
    • Knowledge and experience with networking concepts, protocols, and services 
    • Knowledge and experience in setup, maintenance, and security of Windows operating systems
    • Demonstrates skill in technical problem determination and analyzing system specifications
    • Knowledge and experience in setup, maintenance, and security of Unix operating systems
  • Workingproficiency level:
    • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining firewalls
    • Experience leading project teams or workgroups

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS for the IT Sr. Security Analyst (PIE2):

  • Basic proficiency level:
    • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining firewalls
    • Knowledge and experience in setup and maintenance of network or security devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, or VPN devices
    • Experience conducting forensic examinations of computers
  • Workingproficiency level:
    • Experience performing network intrusion detection and responding to security incidents
    • Knowledge and experience in setup, maintenance, and security of Unix operating systems
    • Experience leading project team or work groups
    • Experience using computer security tools and techniques 
    • Experience with programming or scripting languages
  • Security, network, or systems technical certifications; or an advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS for the IT SECURITY ARCHITECT (PIE3)

Working proficiency level:

  • Knowledge and experience in setup and maintenance of network devices such as routers, switches, or VPN devices
  • Experience with forensic examinations of computers
  • Experience with specifying and implementing security architectures
  • Experience performing penetration tests on applications and systems

Extensive proficiency level:

  • Performing network intrusion detection and responding to security incidents
  • Experience using computer security tools and techniques
  • Experience programming or scripting language
  • Security, network, or systems technical certifications; or an advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting
