About the Opportunity:

This position is located at the Northeastern University Boston Campus. The Professional Master of Science (PSM) in Biotechnology Program is designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in bioscience while simultaneously developing highly valued business skills. The successful applicant will have the knowledge to develop and teach Biotechnology courses at the Master's level. This faculty position has their academic appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and reports to the Chair of that department but will work under the direction of the Director of the Biotechnology Program.

Responsibilities:

The instructor will be responsible for teaching core biotechnology courses in either biotechnology business or scientific areas, as relates to the applicant's expertise. Teaching responsibilities and service commitments are based on program needs and are at the discretion of the Director of the Biotechnology Program.

Teaching Responsibilities include the following: teaching excellence, including utilization of modern pedagogical approaches that create inclusive and active classrooms; effective facilitation of rich, respectful debates and discussions in an in-person or online class; timely review and grading of assignments with appropriate coaching and feedback to the students; consistent connection with students and their performance; adherence to Northeastern's policies; update and integration of industry-relevant examples and case studies into course curriculum. Course design may be required, including development and instruction of online courses.

In addition to core teaching responsibilities, this individual will be responsible for a service component within their role, which may include: participating in administrative committees, curriculum planning, mentoring students, and building industry partnerships of value to the program. This unique position seeks to integrate professional practice into the classroom, specifically with respect to the Massachusetts bioscience ecosystem.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should be committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to a Northeastern University Education.

Candidate must have a Ph.D. in life sciences, business or related field by the appointment start date, and a commitment to teaching excellence at the university level.

Demonstrated experience involving the biotechnology industry is highly desirable. Experience in the business domain of biotechnology or in professional skills development is considered an asset.

Position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work productively and successfully interact with students, faculty, staff and industry partners.

Please indicate how your expertise, knowledge, and skills have prepared you to contribute to this work with written statements addressing the following prompts:

Teaching statement:

Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching in the College of Science (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring a diverse cohort of graduate students.

Diversity statement:

Please provide a statement describing a time when you altered or changed your approach to research, teaching, or service because of the diversity of the group you were working with or your awareness of marginalized populations. What changes did you make, and what did you learn from this situation? We are interested in how you respond to such situations, not the identities of the people involved, so please only disclose what you are comfortable with. Your statement should demonstrate an understanding of the barriers facing individuals from groups marginalized in your field and be in alignment with Northeastern's mission to reflect the diversity of the societies in which it maintains campuses and to meet the educational needs and interests of its diverse population. Some faculty candidates may not have substantial past experience. If that is the case, we recommend focusing in your statement on the types of activities you think could be useful.
