DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The College of Charleston announces a nationwide search to recruit a new Dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The College of Charleston, a nationally recognized public liberal arts and sciences university, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Founded in 1770 and located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College is one of the oldest universities in the nation and among the nation’s top universities for quality education and student life. Its beautiful and historic campus, combined with contemporary facilities, cutting-edge programs, and excellent faculty, attracts students from across the U.S. and around the world.

Over 9,500 undergraduates and approximately 1,000 graduate students at the College enjoy a small-college feel blended with the advantages and diversity of a mid-sized, urban university. Students work closely with a committed faculty made up of more than 500 distinguished teacher-scholars. The city of Charleston – world-renowned for its history, architecture, culture and coastal environment – serves as a living laboratory for faculty and student experiences.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is the largest of the seven schools at the College. Comprised of the departments of Communication, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology, and the Urban Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies Programs, HSS has more than 150 full-time faculty teaching in 11 undergraduate majors, 28 minors, and 7 master’s degree programs. The School contributes substantially to the College’s First-Year Experience, general education curriculum, interdisciplinary studies programs, and Honors College. HSS has a strong study abroad program – providing courses in 12 countries on three continents in the 2018/19 academic year.

The next Dean of HSS will champion the contributions of the Humanities and Social Sciences to the liberal arts and sciences mission of the College and will be a strong public advocate for their continued significance. HSS seeks an experienced administrator with innovative approaches for pursuing the goal of a fully diverse and inclusive educational environment. The ideal candidate will have a track record of effective collaborative leadership across faculty, student, administrative, and community groups; a deep commitment to promoting high-quality teaching and scholarship; and ideas for creative fundraising strategies in support of the school’s varied educational and scholarly investments. Academic qualifications commensurate with appointment as a tenured professor in a humanities or social sciences discipline are required.

The Dean reports to the Provost and is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Dean serves as the chief advocate for the School and its faculty, and, in close collaboration with chairs and other academic program directors, promotes faculty and program development, innovation in the curriculum, diversity and inclusion, fiscal planning and fundraising. (More information about the College and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences can be found at www.cofc.edu.)

While applications and nominations will be accepted until a new Dean is selected, interested parties are encouraged to submit their materials to our consultant at the address below by February 28, 2020, to receive full consideration. Application materials should include a current resume/cv and a letter of interest.
