The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), a not-for-profit membership organization in Boston, MA, is seeking a Managing Editor (ME) for its academic quarterly journal, the American Journal of Archaeology (AJA). The ME is responsible for budgeting and producing the AJA in print and digital formats. The ME takes direction from the AJA Editor-in-Chief (EIC) in matters relating to the content of the AJA and its website and in matters relating to the delivery of that content. Together with the EIC, the ME develops publication policies and standards.

The AJA Managing Editor is a full-time staff position overseen by the AIA Executive Director with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the EIC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs all stages of AJA production from accepted manuscript to print and digital publication
  • Coordinates the work of all aspects of the production process, e.g., copyeditors, proofreaders, image editors, designers, and printer
  • Shares copyediting and layout work as needed, and interacts with authors as needed when questions or problems arise
  • Manages the financial and business operations of the AJA, including management of the editorial budget; assists with negotiating contracts and publishing and distribution agreements with publisher, printer, and other organizations as needed
  • Interacts with the EIC regarding the production process and business operations of the AJA
  • Manages the AJA’s website operations and monthly email newsletter; collaborates with the EIC, staff, and consultants on digital initiatives
  • Oversees the rights and permissions process and the maintenance of archival material and legal documents
  • Attends the annual meeting of the AJA Advisory Board (either virtually or in person)

Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or ABD in Mediterranean archaeology or classical studies
  • Extensive experience (3+ years) managing the business and editorial operations of a scholarly journal
  • Able to work mostly or entirely from a remote location
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly InDesign and Photoshop
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Exemplary time management skills
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the efforts of a disparate group of consultants

The salary for the ME will be commensurate with experience. The AIA offers an excellent benefits package to its full-time employees. Applications must include a cover letter, resume, two writing samples, and the names and contact information of three persons who can provide recommendations.
