Position Summary:

Arkansas State University seeks applicants for the position of chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. The chair is expected to provide leadership and support to a thriving department with a diverse group of biologists. This is a 12 month position that reports to the dean of the College of Sciences & Mathematics with a tenured faculty appointment at the associate or full professor level beginning July 1, 2020. The successful candidate will have a history of impactful scholarly accomplishments and dedication to high quality teaching.

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

About the Department

The department and the college have a strong commitment to scholarship and teaching.  Faculty members in the department have active research programs that engage both undergraduate and graduate students.  A large percentage of faculty have external funding for their research programs.  The department hosts undergraduate degree programs enrolling approximately 600 students and an M.S. program with around 30 students.  The department also participates in two interdisciplinary doctoral programs; Environmental Sciences and Molecular Biosciences.  Department faculty members also support a number of student organizations and regularly participate in outreach events.  The department enjoys an atmosphere that is collegial and supportive and there is a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The department of Biological Sciences at Arkansas State University teaches undergraduate students who are interested in biotechnology, wildlife & fisheries, as well as a large contingent of pre-professional students.  The campus hosts a medical school and the Arkansas Biosciences Institute, a modern research facility that provides lab space and resources for several biology faculty members. The department chair is expected to respect, support, and manage a broad range of sub disciplines within the department.   The department is in the process of hiring three junior faculty members via a cluster hire in the area of Disease in Nature.

 

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

    Faculty evaluations including recommendations for employment, retention, promotion, tenure, non-renewal, and dismissal Support and encouragement of faculty scholarship, grant activity, and professional development Curriculum development (in collaboration with others in the department and university) Coordination of strategic planning for the department Involvement with alumni and donor relationships Communication with academic advisors and other university constituents Advocate for the department to other university entities Supervision of departmental staff Class schedules and teaching assignments Participation in college and university committees and recruitment activities Regular and reliable attendance on campus (generally 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) Other duties as assigned

 

Arkansas State University and Jonesboro, AR:

Arkansas State University is a comprehensive public university located approximately 70 miles northwest of Memphis. The university was recently upgraded to doctoral university: high research activity (R2) classification.  The university has an overall enrollment of approximately 14,000 students.  The university resides in the town of Jonesboro, AR (pop. 75,000).  Functioning as the societal hub of a largely agricultural region, Jonesboro is a growing city with ample cultural and outdoor recreational opportunities

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrated experience in organizational leadership reflective of enabling growth in program offerings and externally sponsored research

Record of teaching, research and service commensurate with a tenured full professor in a discipline and/or sub discipline of biology

Demonstrated skills in communication - written and verbal

Demonstrated experience in administering an organization requiring budgetary approvals, personnel management, and collaborative decision making

Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse and collegial work environment

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
