Lawrence University invites applications for a tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor of Spanish with expertise in linguistics. The ideal candidate will be qualified to teach courses such as sociolinguistics, L2 methodology, Spanish phonetics and phonology, or heritage language learning, and also have a strong background in language proficiency assessment. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English is required. Full-time tenure-track appointment to begin on September 1, 2020. Ph.D. in hand preferred.

Lawrence is a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, WI. Competitive candidates for this appointment will be committed to excellence in teaching and quality research. Responsibilities include teaching two courses per term in Spanish language and linguistics (one release available during the first year), developing courses that complement the university’s offerings, helping to coordinate the instruction and assessment of language and culture courses, advising students after the second year of appointment, engaging in departmental and university service, and occasionally teaching Freshman Studies, our signature first-year program. Candidates are expected to be familiar with current teaching methods and experienced with innovative educational technology.

Applicants should apply online by submitting a cover letter, C.V., transcripts (copies are acceptable), separate statements on teaching and scholarship, and a writing sample at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com/. All candidates are encouraged to address the ways in which they could contribute to Lawrence’s institutional mission and commitment to diversity in their cover letters. Applicants should also have three letters of reference sent to search_spanish@lawrence.edu. At least one of the letters should address teaching. To ensure full consideration, all materials should be submitted by November 17.

Lawrence is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff and the diversity of viewpoints and approaches that its faculty represents. We encourage applications from individuals who will help us create a more inclusive Lawrence by: (1) further diversifying the faculty; (2) demonstrating experience with successful diversity-related initiatives, creative activity, or research; and/or (3) showing interest in developing inclusive pedagogy to address the needs of a diverse student body. Candidates are encouraged to read more about Lawrence and to address in their letters of application the ways in which they could contribute to Lawrence’s institutional mission and goals. See http://www.lawrence.edu/admissions/about or http://www.lawrence.edu/admissions/about/why-lawrence/this-is-appleton for more information about Lawrence and its surrounding community.

Preliminary interviews will be held in January.
