Assistant Professor in Cinema Production
Tenure track position starting August 1, 2020.

The University of Tennessee seeks a filmmaker – including, but not limited to, a director, producer, editor, or other artist whose creative work is grounded in cinema – to join the School of Art and its Cinema Studies program. Our ideal applicant will teach production courses, including introductory digital cinema/video, editing, and/or advanced courses in one or more of the individual’s area(s) of expertise – including, but not limited to: non-fiction production, producing, editing/post-production, cinematography, episodic (web or television), etc.

Tenured and tenure-track professors at the School of Art teach two classes a semester and are expected to maintain a creative practice with national recognition. Salary and research support are competitive.

Responsibilities include active participation in departmental organization, student mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and committees that support the educational mission and initiatives of the Cinema Studies program, the School of Art and the University, including MFA thesis committees.

Required qualifications: MFA or other terminal degree. Demonstration of extraordinary professional achievement may be considered in lieu of terminal degree. Applicants must demonstrate an active creative practice by a strong record of exhibition at film festivals or other curated venues (e.g., museums, cinematheques, commercial distribution, galleries, etc.), and/or through other creative activity.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants should be conversant in issues of aesthetics and theories related to their field and demonstrate their commitment to excellence in teaching at the college level.

The selected individual will join the dynamic, internationally recognized artists, filmmakers, scholars and historians that serve as faculty members in Art and Cinema Studies. The School of Art features nationally-ranked graduate programs and the University’s recently-launched Cinema Studies major is one of the College of Arts and Sciences fastest-growing interdisciplinary programs. Knoxville has a vibrant arts scene, a lively downtown, affordable housing, and is home to significant companies in the film and television industry (Discovery Communications, Regal Cinemas, etc.). Less than an hour’s drive to the Great Smoky Mountains, the city is also home to 1000 forested acres of urban wilderness, the Knoxville Museum of Art, and Big Ears, the acclaimed avant-garde festival of music, film, and art.
