The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in modern and contemporary Japanese literature to start July 1, 2020. Demonstrated interest in comparative research and a deep knowledge of Japanese language and culture are necessary. Preference will be given to candidates who also have expertise in another East Asian language/literature. Ph.D. required by the time of appointment. Regardless of specialization, the successful candidate should be prepared to teach undergraduate survey classes on Japanese literature and culture and to contribute to the department’s Global Core offerings, including the Asian Humanities Colloquium on Major Texts: East Asia. Graduate instruction will involve training specialists in literary studies, including other PhD and MA students, whose focus may be on film, history, art history, religion, anthropology, etc. In addition to working closely with other Japanese studies faculty, the successful candidate should expect to engage with specialists in other areas in the department (which now covers China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, and Vietnam), as well as with cognate scholars of literature in other departments and programs. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled.

Applications must be made through Columbia University’s online Recruitment of Academic Personnel System (RAPS) and must include: 1) cover letter, 2) CV, 3) dissertation abstract, 4) sample of scholarly writing, 5) two sample syllabi (one graduate, one undergraduate), and 6) three letters of recommendation.

Review of applications begins November 1, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled.
