The Department of Africana Studies at Smith College invites applications for two positions: the first in Sociology or Anthropology and the second in Black Women’s Studies, to begin July 1, 2020. These positions are part of a faculty cluster search in Africana Studies that will also eventually include the Inaugural Ruth J. Simmons Chaired Professor. This is an opportunity to contribute to the restructuring of a department with a reputation for excellence in research and teaching.

 

This is an open-rank search for tenure-track or tenured appointments depending on rank at the time of hire. Teaching responsibilities will probably include 200 and 300-level courses, gateway courses such as Intro to Black Culture, History of African-American People to 1960, and the senior capstone seminar. Other courses may be taught depending upon the candidates’ fields of specialization. Ph.D. in Africana, American or Women and Gender Studies, Sociology, Anthropology or a relevant field, is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates with a strong foundation in Black feminism or queer studies, the Black family, labor/class, religion, the judicial system and incarceration, pre-20th century African American history, diaspora, transnationalism, black internationalism and/or global studies, are encouraged to apply.

 

Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women’s college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts. A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects. The College is a member of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Hampshire and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
