Duties and Responsibilities
1. This position will be responsible for teaching upper and lower division courses in Archaeology.
Responsibilities include teaching courses in Archaeology, Historical Archaeology, Archaeological
Field Techniques, Archaeological Laboratory Techniques, Cultural Resource Management,
Archaeology of Animal Remains, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Senior
Project/Practicum--plus related courses in areas of the professor's expertise.
2. In addition to teaching within their disciplines, all faculty members at UHWO are expected to
engage in scholarly activity, participate in curriculum development, provide service to the
profession and broader community, teach courses using distance methods, participate in
program assessment, advise students and supervise senior projects, practicum and readings
courses, and participate in faculty governance.
Minimum Qualifications
1. PhD from an accredited college or university in Anthropology/Archaeology, with a specialization
in Historical Archaeology. (ABD candidates will be considered, but must complete all degree
requirements prior to the appointment)
2. Prior field and laboratory experience in Historical Archaeology.
3. Willingness to arrange for a field school on Oahu.
4. Potential for continued scholarly and applied research.
5. The ability to effectively communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
6. Evidence of high quality teaching.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Proven ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting; experience teaching and working
with highly diverse communities.
2. Knowledge and experience in Forensic Archaeology, to complement the current Certificate in
Applied Forensic Anthropology curriculum.
3. Knowledge and experience in Cultural Resource Management, to contribute to the applied focus
