The Department of African American Studies at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor position in African American Studies with a focus on History with appointment to begin Fall 2020.

Position
The Department of African American Studies at California State University, Fullerton invites applications for the tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of African American History. The faculty member will be responsible for teaching African American history and other interdisciplinary courses to undergraduate majors; additional teaching responsibilities based upon applicant's strengths and African American Studies' Department needs; engaging in scholarly/creative activities leading to national visibility and contributing to a university vision on internationalization and interdisciplinary collaboration; advising African American Studies' Department majors; and providing appropriate university service.

The successful candidate will be conversant with multi-disciplinary/interdisciplinary approaches to understanding African American history in the United States and should be able to offer a broad range of courses, including introductory surveys of race and ethnicity in America, history of racism, and upper division classes in her/his/their area of specialty. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching, research, peer-reviewed publication, and participation in the broader disciplinary community.

The position offers the right candidate an opportunity to participate in the growth and development of a creative, energetic faculty building a dynamic, intellectually exciting interdisciplinary department. The successful candidate will be eager to join with colleagues in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways enabling students to acquire a transformative education on the way to a college degree.

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline, and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will teach include Introduction to African American Studies and A History of Ethnic Minorities. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies or a related field. ABDs must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the appointment date
  • Specialization in Diasporic African American History as related to the 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th century and/or a combination of time periods
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in topics related to a broad historical view of African American racial and social relations
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college or university level
  • A strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment
  • Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and community
  • Demonstrated contributions to diversity through research, teaching, and service
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population, including first‐generation college students

  • Experience in Comparative Black and Native American Studies
  • Experience in Comparative Black and Asian American Studies
