The Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education (CHSE) at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce a search for two tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in counseling psychology, one open rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) and one at the Associate Professor level. Applicants at the Associate Professor level may be considered for both positions. The Counseling Psychology Program is an APA-accredited doctoral program that is jointly housed in the CHSE Department and the Department of Psychology. We seek to hire exceptional scholars in counseling psychology who conduct research related to psychotherapy, vocational psychology, health (including health disparities), diversity, intersectionality, or other areas of inquiry in counseling psychology. CHSE is committed to increasing the diversity of our department and campus community, and thus, women and candidates of color are encouraged to apply.
Candidates shall minimally possess:
● An earned doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from an APA
accredited program (ABD candidates are welcome to apply for the
open rank position, but the PhD must be completed prior to the
start of the initial contract.)
● Record of obtaining and/or seeking research funding
● Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate
courses
● Record of publishing research in peer-reviewed journals
● Record of service activities
● Licensed or license-eligible, as psychologists, who can provide
clinical supervision
Whereas teaching areas are flexible, we expect candidates to be able to teach in one or more of the following areas: individual or career counseling practica, multicultural issues, group practicum, supervision practicum, research methods, consultation, assessment, and foundational areas of psychology (e.g., cognitive, social, history and systems). We are seeking faculty who identify with the scientist-practitioner model of training. We also place a premium on candidates who have academic leadership experience, are flexible team players, and are willing to serve in an administrative role (e.g., program director) as the need arises. A strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentorship, and to working with diverse and underrepresented students, is essential. Salaries are competitive and support for licensure will be provided.
The Counseling Psychology Program at Maryland has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1953. For the past 40 years, the Program has ranked at or near the top of counseling psychology programs nationally in terms of faculty productivity and reputational status. In addition, US News and World Report has ranked “Counseling and Personnel Services” (which includes counseling psychology in the CHSE department) as the #1 or #2 unit in its category for roughly 20 consecutive years. Counseling psychology faculty in the CHSE department work collaboratively with faculty and students in the School Psychology and School Counseling programs, which are also housed in CHSE. It is expected that the successful candidates will contribute to these programs (e.g., through teaching or serving on thesis and dissertation committees).
