Franciscan University of Steubenville’s (FUS) study abroad program located in Gaming, Austria invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, open rank, yearly-renewable theology position, beginning August 2020.  An appropriate Ph.D. or S.T.D. is required at time of employment, but ABD candidates will be considered.  Area of specialization is open, but the capacity to teach introductory courses in Scripture, Christology, Ecclesiology, Moral Theology, and Sacraments is required. Normal teaching load is (3) three-credit courses per semester, with primary teaching responsibility for “The Word of God: Scripture and Tradition.” On occasion, upper level theology electives such as “Christian Spirituality,” or “St. Francis: Life and Charism,” seminars in our UG Great Books Honors Program, and graduate level courses in Fundamental and Dogmatic Theology, would be offered.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, have an active scholarly agenda, and support the Mission of the university. He or she must be willing to make the Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, and thereby receive the Mandatum from the ordinary of the diocese of Sankt Pölten. He or she must also be open to:

  • Contribute to extra-curricular activities fostered by the program which promote the student’s moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth.
  • Actively participate in FUS organized excursions and pilgrimages by giving guided visits (upon request from the program director).
  • Contribute to departmental tasks (such as academic orientation and upkeep of the library).

Employment will be through Franciscan University’s official educational association located in Gaming, Austria and contingent upon receiving an Austrian work visa. Applicants should bear in mind that employment at the study abroad program does not guarantee teaching at Franciscan University’s main campus.

To apply, please submit the following electronically addressed to Dr. Javier Carreño via Ms. Carrie Libetti, Academic Affairs, at clibetti@franciscan.edu: a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a teaching portfolio containing evidence of undergraduate teaching effectiveness (including teaching evaluations and a statement of teaching philosophy), a personal statement responding to FUS’s Mission, and a writing sample. Three letters of reference on your behalf should be independently sent to us.

Review of completed applications will begin October 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.

FUS is an academically excellent and passionately Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition.  The Austrian Program is home to over 200 Franciscan study-abroad students each semester.  We seek candidates who understand and will significantly contribute to the university’s mission and goals.  For additional information, please visit http://www.franciscan.edu/EmploymentListings/.
