The Position

Clemson University is seeking an Associate Director of Operations and Sustainability to report to the Executive Director of the Watt Family Innovation Center. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and coordinating plans for the Center's operations and sustainability. The position provides supervision of the Center's financial, human resources, and organizational support activities, including Center-unique information technology, computing & analytics systems, security, communications, public relations, and student employees. The ADOS will support University-wide cross-disciplinary academic, research, & administrative activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages Center operations and supports use of advanced information technology resources for teaching, interactive learning, research, and interact closely with the AD for Research to provide support for research activities and programs. Interacts closely with the AD for Academic Affairs to support cross discipline education initiatives including undergraduate and graduate research projects, and faculty development initiatives. Supports the Center Executive Director in seeking and developing collaboration and support from industry and government partners. Supports the planning and hosting of Center events (conferences, symposiums, lectures, etc.). Communicates the Center's technology strategy, plans, and execution activities to management, staff, partners, and University stakeholders.
  • Identifies opportunities and risks for supporting student and faculty use of the Watt Center. Identifies technology trends and evolving impact that may support or impede the success of the center in supporting Clemson's mission, strategy and executive plans. Evaluates and identifies appropriate technology platforms for delivering the center's vision and mission. Contributes to strategic planning to achieve the center's goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation and development of resources. Establishes processes to ensure that objectives are achieved, risks are managed appropriately, and the Center's resources are utilized responsibly, particularly in the area of student and faculty use of software that supports collaboration and engagement. Collaborates with the appropriate colleges, departments, and support organizations to assess and recommend technologies.
  • Manages recruitment, training, retention, and organization of all operations staff in accordance with the university hiring process, personnel policies, and budget requirements. Establishes performance metrics, and conducts performance reviews, consistent with university policy standards and guidelines.
  • Directly contributes to the Clemson Forward strategic plan by assessing innovation enabled by the Center. Collaborates with University administrators, faculty, industry partners, and others to progressively provide a climate of engagement in the Center's operations. Coordinates with other Associate Directors and academic users in their evaluation, and assessment of the Center's effectiveness. Supports Center's strategic developments, master planning, marketing and institutional effectiveness. Manages Center's operations assessments and direct utilization of high value assets such as data management, computing, and personnel needs. Provides leadership for, and promotes quality assurance and best practices for the effective use of technology to facilitate learning.
  • Collaborates within and external to the University to assess needs, and develop resources for new programs. Manages the Center's operations assets, and operational budgets. Develops and administers short and long term goals, plans, and budgets for the Center. Monitors progress, and evaluates performance of the Center's operations. Recruit, train, supervise, and support human resource activities associated with the Center.


Qualifications

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

Qualified candidates will possess a Doctoral/Professional Degree in a science or engineering discipline demonstrating creativity. Additionally, candidates will have acquired 10 or more years in innovative development, and at least 5 years in executive leadership positions, including oversight and direction of program, research and staff assessments. They will also be able to demonstrate effective leadership of large programs (>$1.0M).

Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

Preferred in addition to the minimum qualifications, the candidate would possess knowledge in the field of development and implementation of policies, plans & budgets, with experience in distance education technology and connectivity to multiple locations. Additionally, the candidate would possess a background in evaluation of programs and personnel in a learning environment, writing & submitting successful proposals & grant applications, and cultivating philanthropic giving in support of industry-university partnership.
