Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

STCC seeks an Assistant Professor of Psychology with a specific focus on teaching Psychology Research Methods, and brings specific knowledge and understanding of Cognitive Psychology (which includes memory, sensation and perception, learning, reasoning, language use).  This faculty member brings leadership to the Applied Psychology program, and provides guidance to students with appreciation for dynamic pedagogy, and a diverse student body.  Embracing technology for teaching is essential, and it is understood that significant creativity in and outside of the classroom will lend itself to student success.

The Assistant Professor encourages students to explore deeper thinking by employing teaching practices such as self-reflection, critical thinking, writing, and project-based learning.  Student assessment is done using a variety of methods that draw upon success illustrated by psychology research: writing assignments with a strong drafting process; presentations; civic engagement; and portfolios.  The ideal candidate will be flexible and possess the ability to respond to the dynamic changes occurring in higher education.  The individual will help champion transfer pathways to Psychology and Applied Social Science Bachelor's degree options.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching Research Methods
  • Teaching additional Psychology courses, including Cognitive Psychology, and General Psychology 
  • Advise students in their educational planning with a focus on transfer
  • Assist the college to meet its student retention goals by engaging in program/degree review; focusing on pedagogy, including developing applied learning opportunities; and working with student support services
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues in the Social Science department and colleagues in other disciplines, in order to ensure that opportunities for student learning are expanded, and the mission and goals of the School of Liberal and Professional Studies and the college are being met.  
  • Assisting colleagues in developing and implementing program initiatives and changes, and attending all scheduled department, and college meetings.
  • Demonstrating community engagement at both the college and local levels
  • Taking part in the construction and implementation of new learning initiatives
  • Sharing pedagogical approaches with other colleagues

 Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Psychology
  • Teaching at the college level
  • Demonstrated creativity with culturally relevant, and research-informed, pedagogy
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing classroom technology, online learning, and student-centered learning techniques
  • Interdisciplinary teaching, writing assessment, commitment to college service activities, experience
  • Ability to communicate and work with the College's diverse student population

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Duties normally performed in a classroom/lab environment.    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.   Must be able to remain stationary and move about inside an office, classroom or lab.    Must be able to operate or use computer, office machinery, copier, calculator etc.    This person frequently communicates with students, employees or the community. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations
