PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the World Theater Technical Director, the Performing Arts Technician is responsible for assisting in the setup, operation, and striking of theatrical stage, lighting, and sound equipment in support of performances and special events in the World Theater, University Center, and assigned auxiliary buildings and outdoor venues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists in the implementation of event and performance technical needs at the World Theater, and other venues/events as assigned.

• Setup, operation, and striking of sound and stage lighting equipment, staging and drapery, and video production equipment for live performances and events supported by the World Theater.
  
• Oversight of entry level stage technicians and student assistants when appropriate under the guidance of the Technical Director.

  Maintains and organizes theater stage equipment storage and inventory.

• Ensures equipment storage is kept clean and organized as instructed, including the clearance of safety paths located in equipment storage areas.
  
• Informs the Technical Director of any necessary equipment repairs and performs basic equipment maintenance and repairs as assigned.
  
• Maintains inventory of expendable theatrical supplies (tape, lamps, gel filters, batteries, etc.) and informs the Technical Director when additional items need to be purchased.

  Assists with the production design for World Theater/UPSE supported events.

  
  
  
• Assists in preparation of production design (lighting, projection, sound, and scenery) under guidance of the Technical Director.
  
• Assists in the adaptation of touring show production design to the World Theater, including hanging lights as specified on provided light plots and setting up sound equipment and staging as specified on provided stage plots and other production duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• General knowledge of methods and problems related to applicable production specialty area.
• Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into applicable costume, scenery, lighting and sound production.
• Ability to identify and appropriate materials and supplies needed for projects and manage materials budgets for production specialty and specific projects.
• A basic knowledge of applicable software packages for applicable production specialty and ability to use standard features.
• General knowledge of historical periods as they relate to the production specialty
• For costuming, working knowledge of and ability to use the patterns, methods, materials and equipment involved in construction and reconstruction of costumes and related accessories.
• For scenery construction, ability to read blueprints; working knowledge of carpentry and ability to apply knowledge to set and scenery construction; ability to mix and apply paint for sets and scenes; and ability to operate staging equipment.
• For lighting and sound production, general knowledge of basic electrical theory and working knowledge of lighting and/or sound effects.
• Working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to stage and set construction, lighting, and stage operations.
• Ability to assist in the training and supervision of students involved in productions.
• Ability to assist on productions and events on and off campus.
  
  Minimum Qualifications:
  Entry to the first level within this classification requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, video and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.
  
  Specialized Skills:
  Experience supporting live performance in stagecraft, audio, stage lighting, video, and multi-media/projections.
  
  Preferred Qualifications:
  Technical fluency with lighting control systems, audio systems, stagecraft, rigging and scenery knowledge and experience, projection and PowerPoint operation, and stage and production equipment general operation and trouble shooting ability. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite; with Google mail and calendaring programs.

• Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University’s liability coverage.
