The Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies and the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invite applications and nominations for the “Foundation for Hellenic Studies—Illinois Chair in Hellenic Studies.” We seek a scholar who works on Hellenic Studies, with broad expertise in Greek history and cultural production in any period from antiquity to the foundation of the Greek nation state to the present. The candidate’s main research agenda may focus in either antiquity or modern times; nevertheless, the candidate will have to demonstrate competence, either through research or teaching, in all eras of Greek history. The Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies and the Department of History are comprised of an interdisciplinary group of scholars dedicated to working in a wide range of fields in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including literary studies, cultural studies, archeology, philosophy, and history. The faculty offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and serves a diverse student body. Faculty members have exceptional research opportunities as a result of collaborations and affiliations with other units in the college, as well as with UIC research centers such as the Institute for the Humanities.

The successful candidate will have a PhD, a distinguished record of scholarship, and evidence of excellence in teaching and service. This is a tenured position, and candidates must be eligible for appointment at either the full or associate professor rank. A demonstrated ability to foster collaboration among a diverse group of scholars is desirable, as is a strong record of scholarly achievement. The Foundation for Hellenic Studies—Illinois Chair in Hellenic Studies will work with key units and communities at UIC and the Chicago metropolitan area to enhance the mission of the Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies, the Department of History, the College, and the University.
