General Description:

Unit Description:

The Richard Flores Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center (RFT MARC) is a premier center for social sciences and humanities research in the Western Pacific and a major resource related to Guam and Micronesia. One of the goals of the RFT MARC is to publish, promote, and distribute materials of scholarly importance relevant to the region that will enhance the intellectual understanding and contribute to the instructional program at the University of Guam and other academic institutions.

Character of Duties:

This position will support the environmental and archaeological compliance projects necessitated by the increasing construction activities on Guam, add to the canonical knowledge of Guam’s historical cultural properties, and actively assist in the improvement of archaeological services and cultural resource management in the region. This position will combine research and teaching, and will require active field research projects to facilitate student learning and training experience. This position will provide instruction and/or guidance to the summer archaeology field school and cultural/historic preservation professional development experiences, and may also support other faculty who are teaching courses in Micronesian Studies (M.A.) and Anthropology (B.A.) degree programs, which have an average enrollment of 25 and 142 students, respectively.

The successful candidate will serve as the archaeologist responsible for 1) seeking out projects that document historical properties, 2) preparing reports that meet local and national standards of compliance, 3) writing general interest articles that explain significant findings from these sites to the island community, 4) engaging in archaeological research (either field-based or using legacy collections), 5) engaging with community groups and interested personnel in archaeological investigations where appropriate, 6) actively seeking sources of funding to implement archaeological investigations, 7) teaching archaeological theory and techniques in both in-class and/or online format, 8) supporting other faculty teaching courses in Micronesian Studies (M.A.) and Anthropology (B.A.) degree programs for at least one course per academic year, 9) teaching courses to support the Guam Cultural Repository functions, 10) running summer school programs, 11) mentoring students in the proper methods of inventorying and collection care, 12) assisting with the operations in the Guam Cultural Repository, and 13) performing university and community services.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Required Ph.D. in Archaeology/Anthropology from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent and 10 years experience in Pacific Islands research, with an emphasis in historic properties in the geographic region of Micronesia; an active publications record in peer-reviewed journals; knowledge of the federal regulations and protocols related to the monitoring, care and curating of cultural properties; and experience in teaching at the post-secondary level. Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Demonstrated experience in obtaining and successfully implementing programs related to historic preservation and/or cultural resource management. Experience working with online learning programs.

Police and Court Clearance: Pursuant to Public Law No. 28-24 and Executive Order 2005-34, applicants selected for a position are required to provide original police and court (Superior Court of Guam) clearances of no more than three (3) months old prior to commencement of employment.  Off-island applicants must obtain clearances from their place of residence.  Applicants are responsible for fees associated with obtaining the clearances.

Section 25103, Chapter 25, Title 10 of the Guam Code Annotated requires college or university employees to undergo a physical examination, to include a test for tuberculosis (skin or x-ray), prior to employment and at least annually thereafter. A report of such examination must be conducted by a licensed physician within a state or territory of the United States and must be submitted upon request.

Federal law requires presentation of eligibility to work in the United States within seventy-two (72) hours of reporting for employment. Specifically, 8 USC 1324A requires the employer to verify the identity and eligibility to work in the United States of all newly hired employees.
