The Department of Germanic Studies and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for a Senior Lecturer in German. This is a full-time position with a three-year renewable term, to start 1 September 2019.

The Senior Lecturer will act as Language Program Director for German, and is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the German language program in the Department of Germanic Studies, including the supervision of language lecturers teaching in the program who are represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), and the supervision of graduate students teaching in the program as part of their PhD studies. The annual teaching load will be six language courses in German, reduced to at least four while serving as Program Director.

Required are near native or ACTFL Superior-level proficiency in German, an advanced degree in a related discipline, and extensive teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level. Specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy and/or assessment is highly desirable. Experience developing and teaching language courses and experience in curricular implementation is required. Applicants need to demonstrate the ability to design and articulate curricula across multiple sections and levels and to work effectively with faculty members. The successful candidate will be the supervisor of unionized lecturers, with responsibility for directing and evaluating their work, and, if necessary, for corrective action. The Program Director also will oversee graduate student language teachers. In addition, the Program Director will manage all pedagogical, administrative, and financial aspects of the language program, and provide pedagogical training and mentoring to language lecturers and graduate students. In addition to the SEIU-mandated evaluation of lecturers in the German language program, the Senior Lecturer in German may be called upon to perform evaluation duties for lecturers in other departments. This is an annual position: successful candidates must remain engaged with the program during all four academic quarters.
