Assistant Professor in German and Contemporary German Media

The Department of German Studies at Cornell University invites applications for a beginning Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in contemporary German media studies; strengths in pre-1800 German literature and culture strongly preferred. We seek a creative scholar with potential for developing new directions in humanities teaching and research who is interested in joining an interdisciplinary group of scholars to be hired across the university, as part of the Provost’s task force on Arts and Humanities and its initiative in campus-wide Media Studies at Cornell. The successful candidate will hold a full-time position in the Dept. of German Studies, help develop cross-listed Media Studies courses, and preferably demonstrate strong potential for outreach to other humanities fields as well (e.g. Medieval Studies, Early Modern Studies, Science & Technology Studies, or Performing & Media Arts). PhD in German Studies or PhD with media studies specialization in related field (e.g. Comparative Literature, Art History, Intellectual History, European Studies), evidence of excellent teaching and outstanding scholarship, native or near-native fluency in German, excellent writing skills in English required.

Two-course teaching load per semester entails variable assignments, including upper-level language, literature, and culture classes in German, first-year writing seminars in English, upper- level outreach classes in English, graduate seminar in primary field, and occasional teaching of core courses in Media Studies (e.g. “Thinking Media”).
