ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - POPULAR MUSIC

THE SCHOOL OF FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS (SFPA) OF RIDER UNIVERSITY announces an opening for a full-time, tenure track appointment in Popular Music Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning September 1, 2019 on the University’s Lawrenceville campus.

Rider University seeks candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Popular Music Studies major of the School of Fine and Performing Arts.

The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree (PhD or DMA) in music or a related field  with a primary focus on popular music studies.

ABD candidates who will complete their degree within one year of appointment will be considered. We are looking for promising scholars or practitioners with demonstrated teaching experience whose primary field is popular music theory and whose secondary area of interest complements the department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• designing and delivering courses with the Popular Music Studies major, primarily in the areas of music theory, songwriting, etc.
• teaching and/or supervising delivery of other courses in the major, such as history, composition, instrument/voice lessons, or performance ensembles
• recruiting a diverse cohort of students through official University events as well as through communication with prospective students throughout the recruiting season
• participating in departmental activities including representing the department on committees and working groups on campus
• engaging in ongoing scholarly or creative work, which can include traditional academic publications or a portfolio of creative work
• advising and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds

Desired qualifications include:

• Experience in the popular music industry as a scholar and/or practitioner
• Significant experience with the broad spectrum of popular music
• Performance experience in some genre of popular music
• Familiarity with current research on race, class, and gender studies as these relate to popular music study and practice
• Experience coaching students in popular music performance ensembles
