Associate or Full Professor of Historic Preservation

Location: Cigar Factory - Charleston

Clemson University School of Architecture invites applications for the position of tenured Associate or Full Professor of Historic Preservation. In addition, the qualified candidate will assume leadership as the Program Director of this Charleston, South Carolina-based program. Candidates for this position must be highly qualified to both direct the program and teach historic preservation courses and seminars in Clemson's Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, offered jointly with the College of Charleston.

The Graduate Program in Historic Preservation, launched in 2005, is a unique collaborative effort between Clemson University and the College of Charleston. The mission of the program is to educate future leaders in the documentation, evaluation, interpretation, and conservation of historic structures, sites, objects, and landscapes with the goal of developing appropriate preservation strategies for a sustainable future. The program offers a Master of Science in Historic Preservation and the Certificate in Historic Preservation. The 60-credit MSHP curriculum is structured in layers, beginning with an initial core semester devoted to the acquisition of skills in the analysis and documentation of historic buildings, landscapes, and sites, and concluding with a thesis. Coursework throughout the four semesters emphasizes service learning as students work in a \u2018hands on' mode to cultivate preservation skills and gain experience while contributing to \u2018real world' stewards of historic places.

The program is based at the Clemson Design Center in Charleston (CDCC), located in the "Cigar Factory" building at 701 East Bay Street. The CDC.C is also home to a graduate program in Resilient Urban Design and graduate and undergraduate architecture and landscape architecture courses. With its unique combination of history, culture, tourism and expanding economic base, and excellent established preservation practitioners and institutions who work collaboratively with the program,, the city of Charleston and the Lowcountry provide a rich learning laboratory for this program.

The program's academic home is the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture offers degrees in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Resilient Urban Design and Architecture and Health with total enrollments of over 500 students, supported by over 70 faculty and staff. The School of Architecture is part of a College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities along with the departments of City Planning and Real Estate Development, Art, Performing Arts, Construction Science, Philosophy and Religion, Languages, English, and History. As noted above, the program is jointly offered with the College of Charleston's School of the Arts. Founded in 1770, the College is among the nation's top universities for quality education, student life and affordability. Over 10,000 undergraduates and approximately 1,000 graduate students at the College enjoy a small-college feel blended with the advantages and diversity of a mid-sized, urban university. The College's School of the Arts offers studies in art and architectural history, music, studio art, theatre, dance, arts management and historic preservation/community planning.

This position is for a nine-month academic appointment with an administrative 9-month and summer stipend. Start up and salary is commensurate with experience.


QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a strong combination of the following qualifications: academic credentials appropriate to national/international leadership in the field of historic preservation, (a PhD is preferred); academic qualifications and publications commensurate with the rank of tenured associate or full professor; professional qualifications, experiences, and national/international recognition for their professional work; demonstrated excellence in teaching; a strong record of collaborative and interdisciplinary academic or professional activity, including the documented ability to develop new collaborations and public or private partnerships for the MSHP program; a record of administrative and organization/program building experience; and a record of successful external grant awards. Candidates with backgrounds or expertise in material culture and materiality are especially welcome -to include, but not limited to preservation, conservation, archaeology/anthropology, architecture, or landscape architecture. The ability to enhance and expand the program's current curricular posture is an asset, as is expertise in teaching architectural history, and historic preservation history and theory.

The three examples should be representative of the candidate's area of expertise. Do NOT include more than three.
